Newark Central Planning Board Denies Raekwon’s Cannabis Lounge Amid Controversy

In a surprising turn of events, Newark’s Central Planning Board delivered a major blow to Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon and his plans to open a cannabis lounge near the Prudential Center. Despite meeting all zoning requirements, the application was denied due to concerns raised by church leaders and one board member who found the design offensive.

Raekwon’s Legal Battle: Warnings of Appeals and Court Battles

During the meeting, a lawyer representing Hashstoria, the Oregon-based company co-founded by Raekwon, informed the board that their plan adhered to zoning and other requirements. They warned that a denial could lead to an appeal, which the company would likely win in court. However, the board members remained undeterred, ultimately rejecting Hashstoria’s site plan application.

Concerns Voiced by the Board: Lines, Parking, and Stoned Customers

The board members cited several reasons for their decision to reject the application. Among the concerns raised were the potential formation of lines outside the location, inadequate parking, and the likelihood of customers leaving the lounge under the influence of cannabis. Despite efforts by Hashstoria representatives to address these concerns, the board remained unconvinced.

Church Opposition Takes Center Stage: Clergy and Parishioners Speak Out

During the public portion of the meeting, clergy and parishioners voiced their objections to the cannabis lounge’s proposed location. They requested that the lounge be situated elsewhere and emphasized the historical significance of the nearby Old First Presbyterian Church, which has roots dating back to the 1660s. Church leaders asserted that a cannabis lounge in such proximity would not be conducive to the city’s growth and development.

Navigating New Jersey’s Evolving Cannabis Landscape: Dispensaries and Lounges

Recreational marijuana dispensaries have been operating in New Jersey since April of the previous year. With recent rules adopted by the state Cannabis Regulatory Commission allowing for on-site consumption areas or lounges, Hashstoria aimed to be among the first establishments where customers could both purchase and consume cannabis on the premises.

City Approval and Council Endorsement: Hashstoria’s Application Progress

City Council President LaMonica McIver stated that the council had taken the necessary steps to endorse Hashstoria’s application to operate a cannabis lounge, as required by state regulations. Despite this endorsement, the Central Planning Board still opted to deny the application.

Safety, Order, and Lounge Details: Dispelling Concerns

Josh Sanderlin, Hashstoria’s representative, assured the board that the dispensary and lounge would be safe and orderly. The facility would cater exclusively to adults aged 21 and above, with cameras monitoring all areas except the bathrooms. Sanderlin also detailed the process of customers ordering and consuming cannabis within the lounge, emphasizing the controlled nature of the environment.

Offensive Artwork: A Stumbling Block for Approval and Controversy

Despite assurances and proposed changes to address concerns, the board ultimately took issue with a controversial image in a rendering of the lounge’s facade. They deemed the image offensive, and although Hashstoria officials called the image a “placeholder” and agreed to change it, the board remained unmoved and unwilling to approve the application.

Application Denied: Legal Consequences and a Potential Showdown

Ignoring warnings that the denial could lead to court battles, the Central Planning Board proceeded to deny Hashstoria’s application. With all requirements met and the backing of the City Council, the decision may be overturned in court, resulting in a legal confrontation.

Conclusion: A Controversial Decision with Lasting Implications

The Central Planning Board’s denial of Raekwon’s cannabis lounge application has sparked controversy and raised questions about the board’s motivations. As the decision may lead to a legal showdown, the outcome will have lasting implications for the future of cannabis establishments in Newark and beyond. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by the cannabis industry as it navigates the complex landscape of regulations and community concerns.
