Ex-State Senator Pioneers Drive for Minority-Owned Cannabis Dispensaries’ Success

Rickey Hendon, the former Illinois state senator, is rallying for a crucial change. He leads a spirited campaign to aid minority-owned cannabis dispensaries in opening their doors. Acting as a beacon of change, Hendon represents a group of diligent business owners, their dreams on hold due to financial constraints.

The Call for a Legislative Remodel

Hendon and his business associates are appealing to Governor JB Pritzker. They urge him to amend the current legislation, allowing the sale of business interests to investors. This vital step would enable their dispensaries to commence operations and flourish.

The Dismal State of Dispensary Ownership

According to a 2022 state report, the ownership of dispensaries paints a rather bleak picture. Black entrepreneurs constitute a mere 1% of the majority dispensary ownership. This staggering statistic reflects the pressing need for more equity within Illinois’ cannabis industry.

Eyeing a More Equitable Cannabis Industry

Earlier this year, Samantha Chatman from I-Team cast a spotlight on this urgent issue. The focus was Illinois’ cannabis industry and the growing demand for increased equity. The industry now stands on the precipice of a potential breakthrough, with Hendon leading the charge.
