Black Cannabis Magazine will be on the ground June 20–22 to cover this landmark event.
Berlin is about to get lifted—in every sense of the word.
From its grassroots launch in 2016 to becoming one of the largest cannabis trade fairs in the world, Mary Jane Berlin has evolved right alongside Germany’s own legalization journey. Now with the Cannabisgesetz (Cannabis Act) passed in April 2024, legalizing possession of up to 25 grams and home cultivation of three plants, the timing for this event couldn’t be more perfect.
This year’s festival, held June 19–22, is on track to welcome 60,000+ attendees, 500+ exhibitors, and a wave of international interest as Berlin cements itself as the epicenter of European cannabis. And yes—Black Cannabis Magazine will be there, bringing coverage, culture, and community straight from the front lines of global weed reform.
From Side Hustle to Cultural Movement
What started as a student-led hustle by Duc Anh Dang, who first caught the cannabis business bug during a semester abroad in Montana, has become a four-day experience that bridges education, entertainment, and entrepreneurship.
In those early days, Mary Jane Berlin relied on guerilla posters and word of mouth. Today, it occupies over 50,000 square meters of space, includes a massive outdoor area (complete with a Ferris wheel), and introduces a B2B day to connect major players in the space.
What used to be “just a business idea” has transformed into a cultural movement helping destigmatize cannabis across Europe—and the world is watching.
Post-Prohibition Energy Is Real
With Germany now leading the European cannabis wave, the energy around Mary Jane Berlin feels like what Spannabis once was to Spain and what MJBizCon is to Vegas—except Berlin’s doing it their way.
Last year’s festival saw 43,000 attendees. This year? It’s expected to blow past 60,000, with roomier venues, more stages, and double the exhibitor count from two years ago. And it’s not just about bigger crowds—it’s about better experiences.
Following overcrowding concerns last year, the event has expanded with two new halls, capped ticketing, and improved infrastructure. The goal is to keep things elevated but chill. No chaos. No cliques. Just cannabis.
No Booze, No Bull
In a bold move, this year’s festival goes completely alcohol-free—no beer, no liquor, not even energy drinks. It’s all cannabis. And that’s intentional.
“We want to see what happens when people interact with the plant and each other in a more grounded way,” says Duc. The hope is a more peaceful, community-focused energy, free from the rowdiness sometimes brought on by alcohol.
Think cannabis Disneyland—but for adults 18+.
Medical Cannabis and Education Take Center Stage
Another major shift in 2024: a bigger focus on medical cannabis and education. With physicians, pharmacies, and health platforms present, attendees will gain insight into how cannabis is used for chronic pain, mental health, and other therapeutic applications.
Mary Jane Berlin is making space for the full spectrum of cannabis use—from recreational joy to clinical treatment. It’s setting the bar for how future global events might strike the balance between fun and function.

The B2B Shift: Business Is Booming
This year also marks the debut of a dedicated B2B day, tailored for investors, cultivators, retailers, and policy leaders across Europe and beyond. The goal? Real conversations, real connections, and real collaboration on where cannabis goes next.
Gone are the days of cannabis being treated like a counterculture side hustle. Mary Jane Berlin is proof that cannabis can be celebrated and commercialized—with integrity.
Lessons Learned, Future Focused
Duc keeps it real about the road here. “Nobody believed legalization would happen in Germany. Nobody planned it. But it happened,” he said.
He’s not trying to copy the U.S. or Canada either. “Let’s just go with the flow,” he says, signaling a desire for Germany—and Europe—to create their own cannabis blueprint instead of mimicking American models.
And while people keep asking if Mary Jane Berlin will expand across Europe, Duc’s keeping it locked on Berlin. “It’s our city. It gave us everything. This is home.”
