Cannabis Vacations in Africa- Is Africa Really 420 Friendly?

Though Africa is known for wild grown and landrace cannabis, many of the countries on the continent have tight laws associated with cannabis.

In many African countries, cannabis is illegal; however, with the rise of the green rush, we are seeing countries in Africa decriminalize cannabis and become more accepting.

Decriminalization isn’t legalization, so proceed with caution. And this piece is in no way an advice piece.

We always recommend doing your own research and asking your own questions when planning 420-friendly vacations.

Things, laws, policies, etc. change everyday and so, always conduct updated research before finalizing your cannabis vacation plans.

This piece serves as insight into the legal status of cannabis in countries in Africa, for those planning cannabis vacations in Africa.

Countries/Nations in Africa that Have Decriminalized/ Legalized Cannabis to Some Degree

Zimbabwe

On the southern part of the continent, Zimbabwe became a legal producer of cannabis for medical and scientific purposes. It appears that cannabis is not legal for recreational sales or consumption.

Lesotho

A landlocked country in southern Africa, they say that Lesotho has cannabis growing everywhere. They are considered a giant in the cannabis trade and soon, cultivation licenses will be awarded.

Zambia

Located in the southern-central region of the continent, cannabis is legal in this country for research, cultivation, medicinal consumption, and for exporting purposes. Recreational consumption and sales is prohibited.

Malawi

A dusty road , Malawi

In this south eastern country on the continent of Africa, cannabis strain Malawi Gold gets all the rage. But cannabis has not been legalized. This country is growing hemp, on a trial basis, but even hemp isn’t legal. The country is seeking to legalize cannabis for non-psychoactive purposes such as fabric and food products.

Ghana

Here, cannabis is prohibited but very tolerated. The government, mental health professionals, and some religious groups are not in favor of legalization. Recently, the influential Christian Council of Ghana spoke out against legalization, stating that cannabis can: “destroy the future of our young people.” It sounds like they took a page from America’s book of foolery.

South Africa

This is a tricky one because rumor has it that cannabis is legal in South Africa. Though this is the 4th largest cannabis producer in the world, cannabis in South Africa is described as complicated. Cannabis is legal for at home and personal grow, extraction, and consumption- at home- no public consumption.

So is Africa 420- friendly? It appears that in the legal space, it’s getting there and can possibly become that, but at this moment, it seems that Africa is 420 tolerable, not really 420 friendly.
