In two separate incidents on November 6 and November 8, 2024, CBP seized 343 pounds of cannabis packed into 77 parcels originating from multiple addresses in California. This latest seizure highlights a troubling trend of illicit marijuana exports from the United States to Europe and Africa, where premium cannabis fetches much higher prices.

Marijuana Smuggling: A Growing Global Issue

The intercepted shipments reveal the lucrative nature of international marijuana smuggling.

Some of the marijuana found. (COURTESY PHOTO)

According to CBP, while the seized cannabis had a U.S. street value of $1.5 million, its value could have doubled on London’s black market. The parcels were shipped from various addresses in California, a major cannabis production hub, to several locations across the U.K. Federal law prohibits the transportation of marijuana across state lines or exporting it internationally. However, as legal markets in the U.S. flourish, illegal operations increasingly target high-demand global regions. CBP officials noted a recent uptick in similar cases, with multiple shipments of California-grown cannabis intercepted en route to international destinations.

CBP’s Ongoing Efforts to Combat Smuggling

The Philadelphia CBP office has made significant strides in curbing the illegal export of marijuana. Area Port Director Cleatus Hunt emphasized the challenges posed by the global marketplace. “Consumers around the world can essentially get whatever they want and from wherever they want at the price that they want to spend, even if the product violates the export or import nation’s laws,” said Hunt. He also highlighted the risks posed by these shipments, which not only undermine legal markets but can present safety threats to consumers. CBP officers remain vigilant, with Hunt pledging continued action against illegal exports: “We are committed to seizing illicit export parcels of marijuana and protecting the integrity of the global trade system.”

The International Cannabis Market: An Emerging Battleground

The surge in cannabis exports from the U.S. to Europe and Africa stems from the significant price disparities. In the U.K., high-quality American-grown marijuana can command prices several times higher than in the U.S., making smuggling a profitable venture for criminal organizations. This illegal trade complicates efforts to regulate cannabis markets both domestically and internationally. Despite legalization in many U.S. states, marijuana remains classified as a Schedule I drug under federal law. This classification prohibits interstate and international trade of cannabis, creating a legal gray area for businesses and criminal organizations alike.

The Bigger Picture: Implications for the Cannabis Industry

The CBP seizures serve as a stark reminder of the complexities surrounding cannabis legalization and regulation. While legal markets in the U.S. aim to provide safe, regulated access to cannabis, the high profitability of illegal exports threatens to undermine these efforts. The situation also underscores the need for international cooperation to address the challenges posed by cross-border cannabis smuggling. As global demand for premium cannabis grows, the cannabis industry must navigate the fine line between expansion and compliance with international trade laws. Policymakers and industry leaders will need to work together to develop solutions that address both domestic and international challenges.

The post $1.5M Worth of Marijuana Seized at Delco Facility appeared first on Black Cannabis Magazine.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">199743</post-id>

Frontier Airlines Employees Accused of $50 Extortion Scheme

Krissy Robinson

NEWS

airline misconduct

airport scandal

customer service

extortion

featured

Frontier Airlines

military discount

travel ethics

A shocking incident involving Frontier Airlines extortion has come to light. Demonta Roach, a U.S. Navy sailor, accused two gate agents of demanding $50 in exchange for allowing him to board his flight at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The money, Roach alleges, was intended for personal use, including getting their nails done and buying weed.

The incident reportedly occurred on Veteran’s Day, when Roach was heading back to his Navy base in Los Angeles. He said the employees’ behavior made it clear this wasn’t their first attempt at such an act.

“They’ve done this before,” Roach stated. “Her exact words were, ‘I don’t give a damn what you’re in, as long as you have my damn money.’”

The Military Discount Manipulation

Roach recounted how the alleged extortion began. According to him, the employees offered a military discount he hadn’t requested.

“Her friend said, ‘We normally charge $100 for this, but since you’re in the military, we’ll charge you $50,’” Roach explained.

He arrived two hours early for his flight but stepped away briefly to grab food, returning well before the final boarding call. However, upon returning, he discovered the gate was closed.

“The lady closed the door and said, ‘I don’t care who you report to. If you want to get back on this plane, you have to pay me,’” Roach claimed.

Evidence Captured on Video

Roach began recording the incident on his phone, capturing the employees asking him multiple times to send them money via Cash App. When he refused, they threatened to remove him from the flight.

Ultimately, Roach pretended to comply, saying he would send the money, which allowed him to board the plane.

Frontier Airlines Responds

Channel 2 investigative reporter Ashli Lincoln reached out to Frontier Airlines for comment. In response, the airline issued the following statement:

“We take claims like this seriously, and our team is in the process of investigating the situation to determine what happened. In the meantime, we have offered the customer a voucher for $150 as a customer service gesture.”

No further details about disciplinary actions or updates have been provided.

Questions of Ethics and Accountability

The alleged Frontier Airlines extortion raises broader concerns about employee conduct and oversight in the airline industry. For passengers, this incident is a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance when dealing with service staff. For Frontier Airlines, it serves as an urgent call to strengthen protocols and rebuild customer trust.

Roach believes swift action is necessary. “If she did this to me, I can only imagine how many others she’s done this to,” he said.

The post Frontier Airlines Employees Accused of $50 Extortion Scheme appeared first on Black Cannabis Magazine.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">199740</post-id>

NYC Judge Rules Cannabis Crackdown Violates Due Process

Krissy Robinson

Government

cannabis industry

cannabis regulation

Due Process

legal precedent

New York cannabis

Operation Padlock

unlicensed shops

In a monumental decision, a New York judge has declared New York City’s cannabis crackdown unconstitutional, marking a major win for the city’s cannabis businesses. This ruling challenges the authority behind NYC cannabis crackdown efforts and underscores the importance of due process rights for cannabis entrepreneurs facing city enforcement actions. The decision has sparked new conversations about fair enforcement practices and regulatory clarity in the cannabis space.

Operation Padlock and the Constitutionality Question

The NYC cannabis crackdown led by Sheriff Anthony Miranda, known as Operation Padlock, has led to the closure of over 1,000 unlicensed cannabis shops across the city. However, this ruling from Queens County Superior Court Justice Kevin J. Kerrigan highlights due process violations in the enforcement of this operation. Justice Kerrigan argued that Miranda’s actions, including the shutdown of Cloud Corner, went beyond lawful limits and infringed on the business’s constitutional rights.

This decision places NYC’s enforcement tactics under scrutiny, raising significant questions about the legality of the cannabis crackdown.

The Cloud Corner Case: A Test of Constitutional Boundaries

In a high-profile instance of this crackdown, Cloud Corner, a Queens-based business, was forcibly closed despite an OATH recommendation to allow it to remain open. This case not only spotlighted the due process issues within the NYC cannabis crackdown but also highlighted the extent to which enforcement methods may bypass established legal protections.

Cloud Corner’s ordeal began after a raid when the store was not open for business. The case has become a focal point in the conversation surrounding NYC cannabis regulation.

Impact on New York’s Cannabis Market

This ruling is expected to influence New York’s cannabis regulatory landscape significantly. For NYC businesses operating in the cannabis industry, this could lead to more structured regulatory oversight that respects constitutional protections. Business owners across New York now have a judicial precedent reinforcing the importance of due process in cannabis regulation.

With the city appealing this decision, the ultimate outcome may shape NYC’s approach to cannabis regulation in the years to come.

The post NYC Judge Rules Cannabis Crackdown Violates Due Process appeared first on Black Cannabis Magazine.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">199674</post-id>

Beso Wellness Partners With Greenwood & Co on THC Topicals in CA

Krissy Robinson

NEWS

Women

Beso Wellness

California Cannabis Market

featured

Greenwood & Co

Marlo Richardson

Megan Blackwell

Minority-Owned Cannabis Business

Pain Relief Topicals

THC Topicals

Wellness Products

Megan Blackwell, CEO of Beso Wellness, today announced her company’s collaboration with Greenwood & Co, LLC. Her death, caused by occupational asthma, marks a first in the U.S. cannabis industry, shedding light on the overlooked hazards within this rapidly growing sector.

The Incident at Trulieve’s Holyoke Facility

In October 2022, the cannabis community was rocked by the news of McMurrey’s passing. Working at Trulieve’s cultivation and processing facility in Holyoke, she suffered a fatal asthma attack triggered by exposure to ground cannabis dust. This incident has since been a catalyst for reevaluating workplace safety standards in the industry.

Investigation Findings: Alarming Revelations

Investigations by MassDPH and the Massachusetts FACE Program revealed a lack of awareness regarding the respiratory hazards posed by ground cannabis. Additionally, inadequate measures to control airborne cannabis dust and a shortfall in comprehensive safety training were noted as significant contributors to this tragic event.

Trulieve’s Response and Industry Implications

Following McMurrey’s death, Trulieve faced scrutiny, culminating in a settlement with OSHA. This incident, alongside financial and market pressures, has led to Trulieve‘s decision to cease its operations in Massachusetts by the end of 2023, signaling a potential shift in the industry’s approach to worker safety and regulatory compliance.

Recommendations for a Safer Workplace

Post-incident, experts have called for:

Enhanced assessment and management of respiratory hazards in cannabis facilities.

Development of robust safety and health programs, focusing on hazard recognition and safe equipment use.

Implementation of medical surveillance to monitor workers’ health.

Conclusion: A Wake-Up Call for the Cannabis Industry

Lorna McMurrey’s death is not just a tragedy but a wake-up call for the cannabis industry. It underscores the need for stringent safety measures, better hazard recognition, and a collective commitment to worker welfare, ensuring such incidents are not repeated.

The post Trulieve Worker’s Death Marks U.S. Cannabis Industry First appeared first on Black Cannabis Magazine.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">198819</post-id>

Crackdown on Delta-8 THC Snacks: FDA and FTC Take Action

Krissy Robinson

Government

Cannabis

Cbd

Child Safety

Consumer Protection

Delta 8 THc

edibles

FDA

FTC

hemp

marijuana

public safety

Regulatory Actions

Snacks

Introduction The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have taken a significant step towards consumer protection. In an unprecedented move, they’ve initiated a crackdown on companies retailing Delta-8 THC-infused snacks that strikingly resemble popular snack brands. This “FDA FTC Delta-8 Crackdown” is viewed as a paramount public safety measure aimed at protecting consumers, especially children, from potential harm.

An Ingenious But Dangerous Marketing Strategy

These Delta-8 THC snacks are ingeniously designed to mimic popular snacks, making them easily confused with non-THC-containing products. With names like Double Stuff Stoneos, Medicated DopeRope Bites, and others that mirror original snacks, these products may appeal to consumers who unwittingly ingest psychoactive substances. This consumer deception has raised alarm bells, leading to the initiation of the FDA FTC Delta-8 crackdown.

Legal Implications and Public Safety

According to Samuel Levine, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, such marketing practices directly contravene the FTC Act’s Section 5. This Act prohibits deceptive acts in commerce, particularly those that could pose substantial health or safety risks to the public.

A Growing Concern: The Rise in Adverse Events

There has been an alarming rise in adverse events related to Delta-8 THC edibles. Between January 2021 and May 2022, over 125 such incidents have been reported, ten of which have specifically implicated the copycat products. This concerning data has significantly influenced the decision to enact the FDA FTC Delta-8 crackdown.

Targeted Companies and Cease-and-Desist Orders

Six companies, including Delta Munchies and Dr. Smoke LLC, have been served cease-and-desist letters by the FTC. These documents demand the halt of marketing of edible Delta-8 THC products designed to mimic popular snacks, citing their appeal to young children as a major concern. The companies now have 15 working days to respond and provide evidence of specific actions taken to address these concerns.

Regulatory Challenges and the Road Ahead

Regulation of Delta-8 THC presents unique challenges due to its primary derivation from hemp, a plant not federally regulated like marijuana despite producing similar intoxicating effects. The 2018 Farm Bill’s exclusion of hemp from the Controlled Substance Act has led to some states banning Delta-8 THC independently. The initiation of the FDA FTC Delta-8 crackdown is a crucial step, and it remains to be seen how the implicated companies will respond and whether there will be regulatory updates in the future.

The post Crackdown on Delta-8 THC Snacks: FDA and FTC Take Action appeared first on Black Cannabis Magazine.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">197893</post-id>

Catalyst vs Glasshouse Cannabis Lawsuit

Krissy Robinson

Industry

Law

Catalyst

Catalyst Cannabis

Elliot Lewis

Glass House Brands

Graham Farrar

Kyle Kazan

lawsuit

Catalyst vs Glasshouse: Unmasking a Black Market Giant? They accuse Glass House Brands Inc. (NEO: GLAS.A.U) (OTCQX: GLASF), a prominent California-based cannabis company, of capitalizing on the illicit cannabis trade. This method allegedly allows Glass House to sell cannabis to both legal and illegal markets, effectively inflating its balance sheet.

‘Cooking the Books’: A Deceptive Tactic?

The suit claims that the use of burner distros enables Glass House to support the tax-free black market, sell ‘excess capacity,’ and maintain high margins. This is alleged to aid in enhancing their financial appearance, securing substantial investments, and growing their competitive strength. This dual distribution system, if proven, could have substantial implications for legal cultivators and dispensaries.

Sales Figures: Revealing the Truth?

Interestingly, the lawsuit alleges that publicly available data can prove Glass House’s involvement in the black market. It claims that, during Q4 of 2022 alone, approximately 75% of Glass House’s sales occurred outside the legal market.

The Catalyst vs Glasshouse Lawsuit: A Bid to Regulate the Market?

Catalyst’s allegations go beyond corporate malfeasance. They hope that this lawsuit will help bring about the regulated cannabis market that California envisioned when it first legalized cannabis – a market where black market operations do not dominate. The case is currently awaiting scheduling in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

While representatives for Glass House did not immediately respond to these allegations, Catalyst has previously tackled the issue of burner distros with a 2021 lawsuit against the state. Despite its dismissal, this issue is currently on appeal, and Catalyst appears undeterred in their fight against illicit cannabis trade.

Regardless of the lawsuit’s outcome, this case undoubtedly casts a harsh spotlight on the darker corners of the cannabis industry, potentially influencing future regulations and enforcement. The Catalyst vs Glasshouse lawsuit could serve as a wake-up call to industry players and regulators, possibly ushering in a new era of transparency, legality, and fair competition in the cannabis market.

The post Catalyst vs Glasshouse Cannabis Lawsuit appeared first on Black Cannabis Magazine.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">197632</post-id>

Tangaraju Suppiah Executed: A Harsh Reminder of Singapore’s Stance on Drug Trafficking

Krissy Robinson

International

NEWS

Cannabis

capital punishment

Central Narcotics Bureau

criminal justice

death penalty

drug laws

drug trafficking

execution

human rights

international criticism

Singapore

Tangaraju Suppiah

Transformative Justice Collective

In a sobering reminder of Singapore’s unyielding stance on drug trafficking, Tangaraju Suppiah, a 46-year-old Singaporean man, was executed on Wednesday in Changi Prison for attempting to traffic around 2.2 pounds of cannabis. This development comes amidst growing global leniency towards drugs and capital punishment, prompting outrage from rights groups and campaigners.

The Differing Global Attitude Towards Cannabis

While numerous countries have legalized cannabis in recent years, Singapore remains unwavering in its commitment to harsh drug laws. The government staunchly believes that capital punishment serves as an effective deterrent for drug traffickers, contributing to public safety.

Questioning the Safety of Suppiah’s Conviction

Suppiah’s family members, activists, the European Union’s office in Singapore, and the United Nations’ rights office all called for clemency and questioned the safety of his conviction. Suppiah was sentenced to death in 2018 for “abetting the trafficking of more than one kilogram of cannabis (1,017.9 grams),” as determined by the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB).

Critics argue that Suppiah’s conviction was largely based on statements taken during his police interrogation without a lawyer or interpreter present, as well as testimony from his two co-accused, one of whom had charges dismissed. The Transformative Justice Collective (TJC) also highlighted issues with the evidence, describing it as “shockingly thin.”

Singapore Falling Behind its Neighbors

Singapore’s execution of Suppiah has drawn comparisons to its neighbors, such as Thailand, the first Asian country to decriminalize cannabis, and Malaysia, which recently passed legal reforms to remove the mandatory death penalty for certain offenses. Critics argue that Singapore’s refusal to reform its drug policies reflects a disregard for human rights, proportionality in criminal punishments, and justice.

Standing Firm on the Death Penalty

Despite the international outcry, Singapore executed eleven people last year for drug-related offenses. The Ministry of Home Affairs maintains that the death penalty is “an essential component of Singapore’s criminal justice system” and “has been effective in keeping Singapore safe and secure.”

The post Tangaraju Suppiah Executed: A Harsh Reminder of Singapore’s Stance on Drug Trafficking appeared first on Black Cannabis Magazine.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">196838</post-id>

New Mexico’s Booming Cannabis Market: One Year After Legalization

Krissy Robinson

Government

Cannabis

Cannabis Control Division

challenges

economy

equity

excise tax

Legalization

marijuana industry

medical marijuana

new mexico

opportunities

recreational cannabis

revenue

Sunland Park

Texas

A Budding Industry in New Mexico Since the legalization of recreational cannabis in New Mexico on April 1, 2022, the industry has experienced rapid growth. In just one year, over $300 million in sales were reported, as per the state’s cannabis control division. This legalization has led to the establishment of numerous retail outlets, farms, and industrial kitchens across the state, with 633 registered cannabis retailers now serving 2.1 million residents.

The tax revenue generated from these sales has been significant. Over the past 12 months, more than $27 million in excise taxes on recreational cannabis has been collected. Local governments receive a share of the state’s 12% excise tax, along with additional sales taxes that also apply to cannabis sales. This revenue has been a driving force in supporting various state-funded projects and initiatives.

Bordering the Future: New Mexico and Texas

New Mexico’s cannabis market has been significantly impacted by its proximity to Texas, a state where marijuana remains illegal. As a result, cannabis retailers and dispensaries near the Texas border account for a large portion of sales. Sunland Park, a town on the outskirts of El Paso, Texas, with fewer than 20,000 residents, has reported over $19 million in recreational marijuana sales through licensed businesses.

However, the issue of cross-border consumption presents legal concerns. Legal experts have warned that New Mexico customers returning to other states, especially Texas, may face criminal penalties, arrest, and incarceration. It is crucial for consumers to be aware of the laws governing marijuana use in their home state.

A Focus on Equity and Economic Diversification

The push for recreational cannabis legalization in New Mexico was fueled by the desire to expand and diversify the economy, as well as address the harm caused by marijuana criminalization on minority communities and low-income households. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and Democratic legislators have implemented measures to automatically dismiss or erase some past cannabis convictions and reduce financial barriers for startup businesses in the industry.

These efforts to promote equity and inclusion have been met with positive responses, as they allow for a more diverse range of entrepreneurs to enter the market and contribute to the overall growth of the cannabis industry in New Mexico.

A Thriving Medical Marijuana Program

In addition to the thriving recreational market, New Mexico’s medical marijuana program has experienced consistent growth since its inception in 2007. Over the past 12 months, medical marijuana sales amounted to an additional $187 million. Patients qualify for the medical program under a long list of conditions, ranging from cancer to post-traumatic stress.

The success of the medical marijuana program can be attributed to the tight regulations governing its operation, which ensure that patients have access to safe and effective treatment options. The program’s growth also demonstrates that there is a substantial demand for cannabis as a form of alternative medicine.

Challenges and Opportunities

While the cannabis market in New Mexico has seen impressive growth over the past year, challenges remain. Regulatory hurdles, potential oversaturation of the market, and the need to maintain a balance between the medical and recreational sectors are all concerns that must be addressed.

However, the opportunities presented by this burgeoning industry are significant. As more states across the US consider legalizing recreational cannabis, New Mexico can serve as an example of the potential benefits and best practices to follow, ultimately contributing to the ongoing national conversation on marijuana legalization.

Conclusion

One year after recreational cannabis legalization, New Mexico’s market has experienced impressive growth and has had a positive impact on the state’s economy and communities. With a focus on equity, economic diversication, and effective regulation, New Mexico has positioned itself as a leader in the cannabis industry. As the market continues to evolve, it is essential for stakeholders to collaborate, address challenges, and capitalize on the opportunities presented by this growing sector.

Looking ahead, New Mexico’s success in its first year of recreational cannabis sales may inspire other states to follow suit, potentially leading to a nationwide shift in marijuana legislation. As more states embrace legalization, it is crucial for them to learn from the experiences of trailblazers like New Mexico, ensuring that the industry continues to develop in a responsible and sustainable manner.

The post New Mexico’s Booming Cannabis Market: One Year After Legalization appeared first on Black Cannabis Magazine.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">196661</post-id>

Smoakland’s Crypto Loophole: A Game-Changer for Cannabis Payment Processing

Krissy Robinson

Industry

4/20 launch

cannabis industry

cannabis pricing

cashless transactions

credit card payments

Cryptocurrency

high-risk market

innovative solutions

marijuana legalization

payment processing

recreational marijuana

safe banking act

Smoakland

In an increasingly cashless world, the cannabis industry faces a significant challenge: being a cash-only business. With marijuana legalization in 21 states and decriminalization in several others, businesses struggle to keep up with modern payment methods. The solution? Smoakland is beta-testing a crypto loophole for credit card payments, revolutionizing the way customers purchase cannabis.

Crypto: The Key to Seamless Transactions

The key to Smoakland’s workaround lies in cryptocurrency. When customers purchase cannabis, they’re actually buying crypto, which is then immediately used to buy cannabis and cashed out. This method keeps the transaction under the radar of payment processors and credit card companies, who only see a cryptocurrency purchase.

A High-Risk Market with Willing Customers

Smoakland’s Managing Director of Marketing, Jeff Dillon, acknowledges that cannabis is a high-risk market, which results in higher processing costs. However, he believes customers are willing to pay these fees for the convenience of using a credit card. With a 5% processing fee for high-risk transactions, Dillon compares it to e-commerce standard fees of 2-3%.

Protecting Trade Secrets

The Smoakland team is keeping the identity of their payment processor a secret as they navigate this uncharted territory. They’re closely watching fluctuations in average order size throughout the month, hoping that offering credit card payments will stabilize their sales and cater to customers in need.

The 4/20 Full-Scale Launch

Smoakland plans to launch its credit card service on April 20th, a date synonymous with marijuana culture. Dillon notes that the timing is strategic, as customers may have tighter budgets between pay periods. Offering credit card payments could be the solution for those who need it.

More Than Just a Recreational Product

While aware of the recreational nature of their products, the Smoakland team views their cannabis as an “essential, critical medicine for people.” They’re pushing for competitive pricing, offering a $49 ounce as an affordable option for consumers.

Navigating the Future of Cannabis Payments

As Smoakland prepares to launch its payment processor, the company remains optimistic about the future. They believe that the SAFE Banking Act is tilting the scales in their favor, potentially paving the way for a more accessible and convenient cannabis industry.

How do you think Smoakland’s crypto loophole will impact the cannabis industry?
