The Diasporic Alliance for Cannabis Opportunities (DACO), is thrilled to share the exciting news of Black Cannabis Week (BCW) 2024! Happening September 22nd – September 29th, 2024, Black Cannabis Week event organizers invite those all over the country and abroad to join them for an incredible week of education, celebration, and empowerment.

The Diasporic Alliance for Cannabis Opportunities and Black Cannabis Week

The Diasporic Alliance for Cannabis Opportunities is a community organization with a nonprofit fiduciary relationship with Marijuana Justice, a 501c3. Their main goal is to raise awareness about educational, wellness, and economic prospects in the cannabis industry across the diaspora. DACO strives to foster a balanced and thriving cannabis community that promotes physical and mental well-being.

Black Cannabis Week is one of DACO’s annual programming initiatives. It focuses on organizing cannabis events that span across the African diaspora. These events are hosted virtually and physically, offering opportunities for individuals to engage and participate. The primary aim of BCW is to provide a global platform that uplifts and empowers Black individuals within the cannabis industry, allowing their voices and contributions to be recognized and celebrated.

Look and look closely because truths can be found in the lies. For many years, we have been told that prohibition of psychedelics is necessary for the safety of society, however, the truth is, the government has prohibited psychedelics so that our minds remain under their control.

More truth, the human body produces serotonin and psychedelics help humans produce/release more of it. Psychedelics interact with the human body by way of serotonin, by binding and activating serotonin receptors. Serotonin is responsible for mood, cognition, reward, learning, memory, and numerous physiological processes.

The government would rather prescribe lab made chemical infused pills to interact with serotonin in unnatural ways, than allow natural form plant psychedelics. Another truth, through research, psychedelics are proving to be mental health medicine. This piece is focused on a list of psychedelic research/ studies and their findings.

The studies showed that MDMA-assisted psychotherapy was effective in a large sample of adults with PTSD. Because of these studies, expansion into phase 3 trials was granted and led to FDA allowing Breakthrough Therapy designation for this treatment.

In the past, Cannabis was considered “the devil’s lettuce”; but since the Covid-19 pandemic, Cannabis is considered as essential as food, shelter, and water. Cannabis dispensaries and other cannabis related and serving businesses, are considered vital members of many neighborhoods.

The cannabis industry has become a lucrative industry expected to be worth $66.3 billion by 2025. As legalization continues to sweep the globe, Cannabis could be the gateway to entrepreneurial/ investment success. The increasing number of states in America, and countries around the world legalizing and/or decriminalizing Cannabis, and the growing awareness of the benefits of Cannabis, are key factors in its growth.

Forbes states that:

– An estimated 38.4 million U.S. adults consume cannabis at least once annually.

– 36% of cannabis consumers report using cannabis daily.

– 59% use cannabis at least once a week.

Potential Difficulties of Being Black Owned in Cannabis

“Low-income, Black and Hispanic, and formerly incarcerated entrepreneurs also face a more fundamental problem. Cannabis businesses are uniquely expensive and difficult to operate. They must navigate a thicket of state and federal regulations, from installing special ventilation systems to following certain security protocols. Compliance can require hiring experts. And because selling marijuana is illegal under federal law, it’s nearly impossible to get a business loan.”

In Closing

Though there are social equity programs out there, they don’t automatically help and remove hardship from black businesses in cannabis.

The collective way to support black owned in cannabis is to truly support; invest and shop with black owned business!

Heart disease is a leading cause of death in the African American community, usually ranked above high blood pressure- with high blood pressure being a leading cause in the reason that African Americans develop heart disease. It’s a vicious cycle.

Reasons African Americans are Prone to High Blood Pressure and Heart Disease

African Americans have lived, and still live with stresses of government, society, and ancestral trauma. The American diet is also a huge contributor to these figures.
The History of Black People and Cannabis

Did you know that slaves in the south grew hemp? James F. Hopkins said this in 1951 when discussing Kentucky hemp:

“On the hemp farm and in the hemp factories, the need for laborers was filled to a large extent by the use of … slaves, and it is a significant fact that the heaviest concentration of slavery was in the hemp producing area. Kentuckians sometimes referred to hemp as a ‘n***** crop.”

Fast forward to 1937 when cannabis was prohibited. This was the start of deportation of Mexicans and the incarceration of black people. Using the 1980’s as an example of the war on drugs which was also the war on black and brown people: 40,000 black people were incarcerated for nonviolent drug offenses during the height of the crack epidemic.

The Present State of Black People and Cannabis

Fast forward to 2021, many people included in the 40,000, are still incarcerated today. Black people made up 74% of the people arrested, 13x more than any other race.
