A new dispensary opened in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood, marking the city’s first independent, Black-owned cannabis dispensary. The Grasshopper Club is owned by two brothers and their 74-year-old mother and located in a 1920s bank building on the 2500-block of North Milwaukee Avenue. Here’s what you need to know about this new addition to Chicago’s cannabis landscape.
An Independent Black-Owned Dispensary
Matthew and Chuck Brewer, along with their mother Dianne, own The Grasshopper Club. The majority ownership of the independent dispensary is held by the Brewer family, with some minor silent investors.
A Family Affair
Dianne Brewer is excited to be back in the workforce, working on the accounting aspects of the business. The Grasshopper Club is a true family affair with the Brewer brothers and their mother at the helm. Chuck Brewer sees owning a dispensary as coming full circle.
A Unique Approach
The Grasshopper Club’s hospitality sets it apart from other dispensaries. Customers are greeted by a “can-cierge” who helps them find the right product, making the experience similar to going to a favorite bar and ordering a drink.
Plans for Expansion
The Brewer family plans to open a second dispensary in the South Loop during the summer, offering more customers the opportunity to experience their unique brand of hospitality.
The Future
The Grasshopper Club’s opening is a milestone for Chicago’s cannabis industry. Its unique approach to customer service and commitment to supporting African Americans in opening independent dispensaries sets it apart.
