Marijuana Use Among Seniors: America’s New Trend

Intro: A Trend Reignited

In recent times, the spotlight on marijuana has shifted to an unexpected cohort: America’s senior citizens. According to the National Survey of Drug Use and Health, this age group is quickly becoming the fastest-growing demographic to embrace cannabis. This phenomenon is not just a random occurrence; it’s a reflection of how cultural and legal landscapes shape perceptions and decisions. Therefore, let’s delve into why seniors are reaching for the leaf more than ever before.

The Cultural Context: A Walk Down Memory Lane

Contrary to popular belief, for many seniors, cannabis is not a newfound fascination. The Baby Boomer generation, born between 1946 and 1964, often experimented with “weed” during their youthful years. Moreover, these early experiences were frequently devoid of today’s concerns like dosage and sourcing. As one 69-year-old California resident notes, “Many of us were smoking marijuana in the ‘70s or ’80s. There was no idea of dosage, strength, or where the marijuana came from.”

Today’s Cannabis Landscape: More Than Just a “High”

Fast-forward to today, and the legal and cultural views on marijuana have evolved dramatically. Cannabis is now considered an “alternative medical therapy,” available for use in 38 states and the District of Columbia for medicinal purposes. Additionally, 23 states have adopted policies regulating its recreational use. However, this increased availability does not come without its risks, as underscored by experts like Smita Das, M.D., PhD, Chair of the council on addiction psychiatry at the American Psychiatric Association.

Health Implications: A Double-Edged Sword

As cannabis products become more advanced, senior citizens have options beyond traditional smoking, such as edibles in regulated dosages. This versatility offers an ostensibly safer route for older adults. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge the risks involved, particularly for seniors. The number of emergency room visits associated with cannabis use skyrocketed by over 1800% among older adults from 2005 to 2019. Thus, responsible use is imperative.

A Glimpse into the Future: Moderation and Education

While seniors may be reigniting their interest in cannabis, it’s important to approach this trend with caution and education. The key is to recognize the multifaceted impact of marijuana use among seniors and to create pathways for responsible and informed choices.
