Newark’s Green Light to Raekwon’s Cannabis Venture

In a historic move, the city of Newark has endorsed the plans of Wu-Tang Clan rapper Raekwon The Chef to launch a pioneering cannabis venture. After an initial rejections, the application for the Oregon-based cannabis franchise Hashstoria, backed by Raekwon, was granted conditional use approval at the July 24th planning board meeting.

An Intricate Blend of History, Community, and Innovation

Located in the Four Corners Historic District, the facility is set to bring a vibrant mix of history, community, and innovation to Newark’s heritage. The venture envisions a Class 5 cannabis retail facility and a cannabis lounge at 799-805 Broad St., adding a fresh brick face and new windows to display community artwork to the circa-1900s building.

The project is a result of a collaboration between the iconic rapper, civil rights attorney Bakari Sellers, TV personality Charlamagne tha God, and other partners. The dispensary and lounge are designed to honor Newark’s heritage, while fostering a commitment to social justice, mental health, expungement, and creativity.

Designing a Sophisticated Cannabis Experience

The principal at Montclair-based RHG Architecture+Design, Rachael Grochowski, believes design plays an integral role in shaping the cannabis experience. “We are committed to creating an environment that offers a sophisticated, inclusive, and enjoyable experience,” Grochowski stated, affirming that the dispensary aims to cater to seasoned cannabis enthusiasts and the cannabis-curious alike.

Despite initial community concerns about the chosen location, Hashstoria reassured the public that it would comply with all CRC regulations and would not cause disturbance to the neighborhood.

The Final Approval

While Newark’s planning board has given the go-ahead, the final approval from the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission (CRC) remains to be obtained before the venture can officially open its doors.

As the cannabis industry undergoes a remarkable transformation, Raekwon’s venture in Newark is setting the stage for a new era of cannabis retail, merging music, culture, and cannabis in a dynamic and inclusive environment. This innovative business model not only adds a new facet to Newark’s culture but also reflects a profound commitment to social justice and mental health.
