NJBAC Launches Free Cannabis Training Academy

The New Jersey Business Action Center (NJBAC), under the leadership of the New Jersey Department of State and with the support of the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission (NJ-CRC), launched the Cannabis Training Academy (CTA) last week. This no-cost, comprehensive online educational platform is now available and aims to support current and aspiring cannabis business owners as they navigate the complex process of establishing a licensed, regulatory-compliant cannabis business in New Jersey.

Why the Cannabis Training Academy (CTA) Matters

As the cannabis industry continues to grow in New Jersey, there is a pressing need for business owners to understand not just the opportunities but also the challenges of this highly regulated space. The CTA is designed to fill this knowledge gap by offering a learner-led program that covers a wide range of topics, from applying for a license to operational best practices.

“The State of New Jersey is committed to seeing aspiring small business owners succeed in the cannabis industry. The CTA aims to create a well-informed, diverse community of leaders who can take advantage of these new opportunities and contribute to the growth and economic success of their respective neighborhoods and the state overall,” shared Governor Phil Murphy.

What You Can Expect from the CTA

The CTA provides a robust curriculum that guides participants through every critical phase of cannabis business development. Here are some key topics that the CTA covers:

  • Licensing Application Process: Learn how to submit successful applications, including conditional licenses and full licenses, which are crucial for operating legally in New Jersey’s cannabis market.
  • Municipal Approval and Zoning: Understanding local regulations is key to setting up shop, and the CTA provides a roadmap to securing the necessary approvals.
  • Raising Capital: Learn the financial aspects of starting a cannabis business, including tips on securing funding and budgeting for long-term success.
  • Post-Licensing Operations: Once your business is licensed, there are a host of operational considerations. The CTA ensures you’re prepared for day-to-day management, from staffing to compliance.
  • Conditional Conversion Support: Businesses that start with a conditional license often face unique challenges, and the CTA provides targeted support to help you convert to a full license.

Targeting Impact Zones for Equity and Growth

A key focus of the CTA is to uplift those in CRC-designated Impact Zones—areas in New Jersey most affected by cannabis prohibition and enforcement. Residents or business owners planning to establish cannabis operations in these areas can access additional resources through seven extended levels of coursework. This special track includes over 60 classes, specifically tailored to address the unique challenges and opportunities faced by Impact Zone entrepreneurs.

“Even if a businessperson has had experience working in the cannabis industry, the CTA will be an invaluable and up-to-date resource that will guide them through the process of legal cannabis business management. The insights provided will help entrepreneurs avoid common pitfalls and get their business on the right track from the start,”explained Lieutenant Governor Tahesha Way, Esq.

Flexible Learning Options to Fit Your Schedule

The Cannabis Training Academy has been designed with flexibility in mind. Participants can access pre-recorded webinars at their convenience and register for live virtual Q&A sessions with industry experts. This combination of on-demand learning and real-time support ensures that participants can learn at their own pace while getting the answers they need.

Additionally, the CTA will host in-person workshops in the future, providing hands-on learning experiences and networking opportunities for participants.

How to Get Started

The Cannabis Training Academy is now live. Entrepreneurs who are New Jersey residents and over 21 can visit nj.gov/state/bac/cannabis-training/about for more information and to register for the program.

Whether you’re an aspiring entrepreneur or a seasoned professional, the Cannabis Training Academy is a valuable resource that can help you succeed in New Jersey’s rapidly expanding cannabis market.
