Senator Cory Booker Labels Marijuana a “Dangerous Drug” Amid Calls for Legalization

Introduction: A Surprising Shift in Senator Cory Booker’s Stance

Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) recently called marijuana a “dangerous drug” while continuing to push for its legalization and regulation, expressing frustration with the industry’s lack of diversity and the difficulties in expunging records.

Concerns About Marijuana as a Dangerous Drug

At a Tisch College panel, Senator Booker acknowledged marijuana’s potential dangers, specifically the effects of high-potency THC products on the brain. This marks a significant shift in his position, as he has been a long-time advocate for cannabis reform. However, he maintains that alcohol is also dangerous and calls for more research on both substances to better inform policy decisions.

Despite his concerns, he recognizes that the status quo is untenable and will only lead to more discriminatory criminalization. The challenge is determining the right path forward. According to Senator Booker, it is crucial to strike a balance between understanding the potential dangers of marijuana use and acknowledging its potential benefits. He believes that proper regulation and a well-informed approach to cannabis policy can minimize the risks associated with its use, while ensuring that those who can benefit from the plant have access to it.

The Struggle for Industry Diversity and Expungement

Booker remains committed to promoting diversity and equity in the cannabis industry. He is frustrated with the industry being “overwhelmingly non-diverse” and the slow progress in expunging records for those with prior cannabis convictions in states where marijuana is now legal. He believes that the industry should focus on creating opportunities for those disproportionately impacted by marijuana prohibition.

Senator Booker has been working tirelessly to ensure that cannabis reform is fair and equal. However, he believes that the lack of diversity in the industry is partly due to the ongoing federal prohibition, which makes it difficult for women and minorities to secure the capital necessary to start and maintain their businesses. This has resulted in large, multi-state operators funded by wealthy investors dominating the market, making it challenging for smaller, diverse businesses to compete.

The Path Forward: Regulation and Research

Senator Cory Booker advocates for a system that strictly regulates and enforces policies related to marijuana, protecting young people from accessing harmful substances. Additionally, he promotes research on alcohol and drugs and is working with colleagues like Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) to streamline the federal rescheduling of “breakthrough therapies” such as psilocybin and MDMA for research and drug development purposes.

Booker, along with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and other colleagues, has held early meetings with bipartisan senators to discuss and advance cannabis legislation. However, their efforts are complicated by the fact that Republicans now hold control of the House.

Balancing Concerns and Advocacy

Senator Cory Booker’s recent remarks on marijuana as a dangerous drug add a new dimension to his advocacy for equitable cannabis reform. Balancing concerns about the drug’s potential dangers with the need for diversity and equity in the industry, Booker remains dedicated to creating a regulated and inclusive cannabis market that addresses the historical injustices of marijuana prohibition. His perseverance and commitment to achieving a fair and just cannabis industry demonstrate his unwavering belief in the importance of equitable reform, even as he acknowledges the potential risks associated with marijuana use.
