Guests also participated in several hands-on activities, including writing letters to incarcerated cannabis prisoners and signing petitions urging President Biden and state governors to grant cannabis clemency.

The program kicked off with remarks from Stephanie Shepard, LPP’s Director of Advocacy, who shared her personal journey of being convicted for cannabis in New York. “It’s full circle to be here today, supported by those who once fought for my freedom,” she expressed passionately, setting the tone for the night.

A Legacy of Legal Support

Sarah Gersten, Executive Director and Co-Founding Member of Last Prisoner Project, took the stage to introduce Goodwin, a multinational law firm, and key partner in LPP’s Cannabis Justice Initiative (CJI). This pro bono initiative has provided legal representation to over 300 incarcerated individuals, reducing sentences by more than 100 years. One of those beneficiaries, Andy Cox, moved the audience with his story of release after serving a life sentence for cannabis. “Without LPP, I’d still be in that prison cell,” Cox shared, highlighting the life-changing impact of the organization.

Honoring the Heroes

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – SEPTEMBER 24: Michael Thompson and Calvin Johnson attend Last Prisoner Project’s Inaugural Journey To Justice Gala at Sony Hall on September 24, 2024 in New York City. His release marks the end of a challenging chapter that started almost six years ago, and now, Ralo embraces the future with an indomitable spirit.

The Backstory:

The saga began in 2018, when authorities found a large quantity of marijuana on Ralo’s private aircraft. His response to the charges was a staunch plea of innocence, coupled with a refusal of a plea deal. Fast forward through legal rigors, and Ralo was looking at eight years behind bars. Yet, with time served and good conduct, the stint was shortened, underscoring the justice system’s complexity and Ralo’s fortitude.

The Release and Celebration:

The moment of Ralo’s release was a confluence of joy and support, as evidenced by the viral videos of him exchanging his prison shoes for luxury sneakers. The warm welcome from friends and family signified more than a personal victory; it was a communal celebration of perseverance.

The Path Forward:

With the chains of his sentence unlocked, Ralo doesn’t pause. He signals his comeback with “First Day Out,” a track that echoes his personal evolution and underscores his readiness to influence the music industry once more.

In-Depth Look:

While in confinement, Ralo’s commitment to his music and his community did not wane. Even from within the prison walls, he managed to release projects that kept his message and voice alive. These releases were not just music—they were beacons of hope for many who shared his struggles.

Conclusion:

Ralo’s release from prison isn’t just about a man gaining his freedom; it’s about the transformative power of adversity. It’s a narrative that goes beyond the individual, touching the hearts of a community and igniting a conversation about justice, reform, and the strength of the human spirit. As Ralo steps into the daylight of his liberation, his journey continues to resonate with us all, inspiring a collective belief in second chances and the redemptive power of music.

The post Rap Artist Ralo Released From Prison, Begins New Chapter appeared first on Black Cannabis Magazine.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">198780</post-id>

Wiz Khalifa Joins The Smoke With Me Podcast: An Interview with DJ Infamous and The Wolf of Weed Street

Hazey Taughtme

Celebrity

Music

TV & Film

Advocacy

breeders

cannabis industry

Cannabis strains

cultivators

DJ Infamous

entrepreneurship

featured

hassim robinson

KK

OG strains

Smoke With Me Podcast

The Wolf of Weed Street

tissue culture

Winner’s Circle Genetics

Wiz Khalifa

The Smoke With Me Podcast is a show that explores the important guests to the culture in the cannabis industry, hosted by DJ Infamous, The Wolf of Weed Street (Hassim Robinson), CEO of Winners Circle Genetics. His work as a civil rights attorney has made him a vital voice in advocating for justice for families who have lost loved ones as a result of police violence. In this article, we will explore his advocacy and activism that led to this significant achievement.

Advocacy for Civil Rights:

Benjamin Crump has been a long-time advocate for civil rights, lending his voice to represent those who had no means of representation. His work on behalf of Trayvon Martin’s family, an unarmed Miami teen who was shot and killed in a conflict with George Zimmerman, gained international attention and placed him squarely at the center of the modern civil rights movement. Crump continued to represent several other families in similar fashion, including those of Mike Brown in Ferguson, Mo.; Eric Garner in New York; Terence Crutcher in Tulsa, Okla., Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Ky.; and George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Championing Justice:

Crump founded Ben Crump Law PLLC in 2017 to continue his mission to champion the cause of justice for unarmed people who were injured or killed as a result of their interactions with law enforcement. His most recent high-profile client was the family of Tyre Nichols, who died after being severely beaten by a group of officers in Memphis.

Social Justice Institute:

As the founder and director of the nonprofit Ben Crump Social Justice Institute, based in suburban Minneapolis, he aims to create opportunities for all voices to be heard by ensuring the fair application of laws and the promotion of protecting individual rights.

The Fight for Black History:

During his acceptance speech, Crump remarked on the attempts to block the uncensored teaching of Black history in Florida, where his practice is located, and where he has gotten involved in the fight and has threatened to sue Governor Ron DeSantis over his policy regarding the teaching of AP African American history courses. Crump stated that he would continue to fight in the court of law, in the court of public opinion, and now that they are trying to ban celebrated Black authors in AP African American studies, we must advocate for our children and our culture in the classrooms and demand that they acknowledge that the teaching of Black history matters!

The Social Justice Impact Award:

The NAACP Social Impact Award recognizes people who impact civil and social justice. Crump follows journalist Nikole Hannah Jones, who won in 2022, and politician and voting rights advocate Stacey Abrams, who won in 2021. This award recognizes the tireless work of people who fight for justice and equality for all. Crump pledged to keep up the fight that so many historical figures have fought before him and urged everyone to fight for their children’s future.

The post Benjamin Crump Receives Social Justice Impact Award: A Look at His Advocacy and Activism appeared first on Black Cannabis Magazine.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">191326</post-id>

San Diego City Council Member Channels Inner Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre to Advocate for Cannabis Social Equity

Hazey Taughtme

Equity

Government

Advocacy

cannabiscommunity

cannabisindustry

CannabisSocialEquity

deathrowrecords

Dr Dre

DrDre

featured

Music

realones

SanDiego

SD

snoop dogg

snoopdogg

SocialEquity

TheChronicAlbum

San Diego City Council member Armand King recently brought some entertainment and excitement to the council’s meetings by channeling his inner Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre. However, it has also come under fire from opponents who view it as promoting the use of drugs and potentially encouraging young people to experiment with them.

How Is Ganjaland Played?

To play Ganjaland, players choose their character pieces and place them on the starting space of the board. Each player takes turns drawing a card from the deck, which contains various challenges and instructions related to cannabis use. Players must follow the instructions on the card and move their character piece accordingly on the board. Examples of challenges on the cards include naming movie titles you’d watch in “high definition,” sharing hilarious spliff-related confessionals, or even passing joints.

The game comes with various accessories, including a cannabis crown and photo props, to enhance the players’ experience. Pro-cannabis advocates argue that the game is harmless and a fun way to bring people together. They see it as an opportunity to celebrate the legalization of cannabis in many parts of the world and a way to promote the positive effects of cannabis use.

Criticisms of the Game

However, anti-drug campaigners have criticized the game for promoting drug use and potentially encouraging young people to experiment with drugs. It is important to have open and honest conversations with young people about the risks associated with drug use, including the use of cannabis. While Amazon sells the game for $39.99 in Canada, the company has stated that users must be 18 and over to use their services, and under-18s need the involvement of a parent or guardian.

Conclusion

Whether loved or hated, there is no denying that Ganjaland has sparked interesting conversations about the perceived dangers of cannabis use. It is important to be aware of the potential risks associated with cannabis use and to have open and honest discussions about them. As the debate surrounding cannabis use continues, it is essential to promote education and responsible decision-making.

The post Ganjaland: A Controversial Board Game Celebrating Cannabis Use appeared first on Black Cannabis Magazine.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">189804</post-id>

Elias Theodorou: An Advocate, Fighter, and Cannabis Hero

Hazey Taughtme

Sports

Advocacy

athlete

Cannabis

colon cancer

Elias Theodorou

fighting

Leafythings

legacy

mixed martial arts

MMA

sports

Toronto

UFC

Mixed martial arts fighter Elias Theodorou passed away on September 11th, 2022, after battling colon cancer that metastasized. He fought his last bout in December 2021, beating Bryan Baker at an event called Colorado Combat Club 10. Theodorou’s career in MMA was remarkable, but his advocacy for medical cannabis use by professional athletes was even more notable.

In 2020, Theodorou became the first Canadian athlete to receive a cannabis exemption for professional sports. The following year, he secured a similar exemption in Colorado, making him the first pro athlete in the U.S. to do so. These victories for cannabis use in sports led to the UFC and the United States Anti-Doping Agency adopting similar stances. Theodorou’s efforts on behalf of athletes who use cannabis will undoubtedly continue to impact the sports world for years to come.

Theodorou’s Impact on the Toronto Marijuana Community

Theodorou was also an active member of the Toronto marijuana community. He was the “chief access officer” for Leafythings, a cannabis platform that helps Canadians find delivery services and dispensaries. He fought for other fighters by lobbying the Association of Boxing Commissions to recognize a committee of fighters and retired athletes to give them a voice in matters of fight regulation. His contributions to the cannabis and sports industries are immeasurable.

Theodorou’s Life Beyond the Cage

Before he became a professional MMA fighter, Theodorou graduated from Toronto’s Humber College with a degree in creative advertising. He then pursued acting, stunt work, and modeling, appearing on the cover of several romance novels published by Toronto-based Harlequin Books. Theodorou’s life beyond the cage was as interesting and varied as his career in MMA.

Remembering Elias Theodorou

Theodorou’s family remembered him Monday as “eternally, irrationally, and infectiously optimistic.” He was a fighter in every sense of the word, and his legacy as a cannabis advocate and MMA athlete will be remembered for years to come. MMA promoter UFC remembered Theodorou as an “affable Toronto native” who made an impact in his 34 years, one that won’t be forgotten. Sports lawyer Erik Magraken wrote Monday that Theodorou’s victories for cannabis use in sports “led to a remarkable legacy Elias created.”

The post Elias Theodorou: An Advocate, Fighter, and Cannabis Hero appeared first on Black Cannabis Magazine.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">195739</post-id>

<!-- Performance optimized by W3 Total Cache.
