This year’s event is bigger than ever, with Zushi as the main sponsor, Ball Family Farms competing as the leading Black-owned social equity brand, and Ted’s Budz pulling up with fresh exclusive drops to mark the occasion.
ZaLympix: The Ultimate Cannabis Competition

Industry Judges – A select panel of 28 top cannabis professionals, cultivators, and tastemakers (myself included) sampled 132 strains over 30 days and narrowed it down to the best 28.

Public Judges – After the industry narrowed the selection, ZaLympix Judge Kits were released in dispensaries across California, allowing the public to vote on which strains deserve the crown.

This two-stage process ensures that only the absolute best cannabis makes it to the top, as judged by both industry leaders and real consumers.

In a major victory for California’s legal cannabis industry, the state’s Unified Cannabis Enforcement Taskforce recently seized over 2.2 million pieces of illicit and fraudulent cannabis packaging in the Los Angeles Toy District. This operation underscores the state’s commitment to maintaining the safety and integrity of its regulated cannabis market, while also protecting the public, particularly children, from the dangers posed by illicit cannabis products.

Uncovering the Extent of the Problem

The packaging materials, which were marked with forged state seals, were designed to mimic popular candy and snack brands like Sweet Tarts and Twinkies. These items, branded to appeal to children, were a thin yet frightening veil of legitimacy for illicit operators looking to circumvent California’s stringent cannabis regulations. According to the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration’s director, Nick Maduros, this kind of illegal packaging allows unlicensed cultivators and sellers to bypass state regulations and taxes, presenting a serious risk to public safety.

In a statement, Maduros emphasized the gravity of the situation: “Illegal packaging of cannabis products provides a ‘thin yet frightening veil of legitimacy’ for illicit operators and allows illegal cultivators to avoid state regulations and taxes.”

The Operation: A Coordinated Effort

The sting operation, conducted by the state’s Unified Cannabis Enforcement Taskforce, targeted 11 stores in the Toy District, a hub known for the sale of bulk packaging materials used in the illicit cannabis market. The exact date of the raid was not disclosed, but officials described it as a recent and coordinated effort involving both local and statewide law enforcement partners.

During the raid, authorities seized not only the 2,279,900 counterfeit cannabis packages but also 31 banker-sized boxes and garbage bags filled with illegal cannabis. Additionally, 32 boxes and bags containing illegal cigarettes and other tobacco products were confiscated, further highlighting the breadth of illegal activities in the area.

The Ongoing Fight Against Illicit Cannabis Operations

Governor Gavin Newsom praised the operation, stating that the task force plays a crucial role in protecting California’s legal cannabis industry and its consumers. By cutting off revenue streams to criminal organizations, the state is also addressing broader issues such as unregulated cultivation practices that harm the environment and illegal labor practices that contribute to human trafficking.

“The operation in the Toy District represents an important new direction by the Unified Cannabis Enforcement Taskforce to disrupt unlicensed cannabis sales,” said Nicole Elliott, Director of the Department of Cannabis Control. “Illegal packaging is dangerous to consumers, especially when it is ripping off well-known brands that are attractive to children, and needs to be removed from the marketplace.”

The task force’s efforts this year alone have led to the seizure of over $120 million in illegal cannabis products, bringing the total to more than $465 million since the task force was established in 2022. These actions are crucial in safeguarding the state’s legal market, which is a significant contributor to California’s economy, and ensuring that consumers can trust the products they purchase.

Protecting California’s Consumers and Industry

The seizure of these illicit packages is a significant step in ensuring that the state’s legal cannabis market remains protected from the threats posed by illegal operators. By removing these counterfeit products from circulation, California is not only protecting consumers but also upholding the integrity of businesses that operate within the bounds of the law.

Governor Newsom’s office reiterated the state’s unwavering commitment to cracking down on illegal cannabis operations, stating, “We will not tolerate criminal activity that undermines the legal market, especially when it puts children at risk.”

This operation sends a clear message to those involved in the illicit cannabis trade: California will continue to pursue and dismantle illegal operations, ensuring that the benefits of legalization are fully realized by its citizens, and that public safety remains a top priority.

Introduction

California’s legal cannabis operators breathed a collective sigh of relief today as Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed Assembly Bill 1207. The controversial legislation had threatened to impose overly stringent packaging and labeling regulations on the state’s legal cannabis market.

Governor Newsom’s Decisive Act

In his veto statement, Governor Newsom recognized the existing robust protections for youth in Proposition 64 and expressed concerns about the overly broad definition of “attractive to children” used in the bill. This measure would have unfairly penalized legal operators, necessitating a redesign of logos, packaging, and even digital content—impacting brands that have been years in the making.

Reinforcing Existing Protections

Governor Newsom’s decision reaffirms the efficacy of current regulations under Proposition 64 and the Department of Cannabis Control. He emphasized the need for refining and advancing existing youth-related cannabis protections and called for strengthened enforcement measures.

What This Means for the Industry

The veto of AB 1207 could serve as a turning point for California’s legal cannabis market. With the burden of an imminent overhaul lifted, businesses can focus on growth, differentiation, and serving the community responsibly. The decision underscores the necessity for well-considered, practical regulations that serve both public safety and industry viability.

Towards Thoughtful Regulation

The Governor’s veto opens the door for more nuanced discussions on youth safety and public health, without imposing undue burdens on legal operators. It also pushes for enhanced enforcement measures, thereby targeting the real problem: the illicit market.

Challenges Ahead

Despite the veto, the industry still faces substantial challenges, including competition from illegal operators. The Governor’s decision, while monumental, is but a single step toward a balanced and equitable cannabis market in California. There’s much work to be done to make this market a beacon for responsible commerce and social justice.

Conclusion

Governor Newsom’s veto of AB 1207 signifies a critical moment for California’s cannabis industry, illustrating the importance of balanced regulation that doesn’t handicap legal operators. With this decision, the industry looks forward to further collaboration with the state to create regulations that are both fair and effective.

Introduction

In an unprecedented move, the city of Fresno has teamed up with the California Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Cannabis Administrative Prosecutor Program (CAPP). This pioneering alliance serves as a cornerstone to combat the endemic issue of illegal cannabis operations within California.

The Ubiquity of the Problem

Since the legalization of cannabis in California in 2016 under the Adult Use of Marijuana Act, unlicensed cannabis activities remain a significant problem. These illegal operations make up the majority of cannabis activities in California, resulting in a public safety issue, environmental degradation, and an unstable market for legitimate cannabis businesses.

Why is This Important?

Fresno City Attorney Andrew Janz pointed out the impact of these operations. They threaten not just public safety but also diminish the tax base that legal cannabis operations could provide. Additionally, these underground activities target vulnerable populations, including children and minors, with no fear of repercussions.

What is the CAPP Program?

The CAPP Program offers local governments a unique set of tools. It increases the scope of illicit cannabis enforcement, provides essential resources, and facilitates cost-effective evidence collection. This holistic approach allows for large-scale, statewide prosecutions against entities involved in illegal cannabis operations.

The Nuts and Bolts of the Partnership

Fresno receives comprehensive support from the DOJ, ranging from legal consultation to logistical assistance in evidence collection and administrative procedures. This multipronged assistance ensures a thorough and effective approach to identifying and penalizing illegal operators.

Economic Impact

Illegal cannabis operations aren’t just a criminal issue; they’re an economic one too. They undercut the revenue that the legal industry and, by extension, the state could earn. Thus, this new program also aims to protect and uplift the legitimate cannabis industry in Fresno and across California.

A Model for Future Partnerships

Attorney General Rob Bonta has high hopes for this venture. He believes that the CAPP Program, with its innovative approach, will set a new standard for how local and state governments can collaboratively address complex issues like illegal cannabis activity.

Final Thoughts

The launch of the CAPP Program in Fresno marks a crucial step in the ongoing struggle against illegal cannabis operations. By offering a comprehensive, multi-layered approach, this program could very well become the new paradigm in combating illicit cannabis activities, not just in California but across the nation.

Glass House Defamation Lawsuit: A New Chapter in the Cannabis Industry

California-based Glass House Brands has launched a defamation lawsuit against Catalyst Cannabis, marking an intriguing development in the cannabis industry. The crux of this legal battle is Catalyst’s leadership’s lawsuit and allegations, painting Glass House as the “biggest black marketeer” of cannabis in American history.

Unraveling the Glass House Defamation Lawsuit

This Glass House defamation lawsuit, targeting Catalyst, CEO Elliot Lewis, and co-founder Damian Martin, emerges in the wake of Catalyst’s allegations of illegal diversion of cannabis products by Glass House. Fueled by social media claims made by Lewis and Martin, Catalyst suggested that Glass House was distributing “75% to 80%” of its products to unregulated markets throughout the U.S.

In response, Glass House brands the social media campaign by Catalyst’s co-founders as a “systematic defamatory attack”. They vehemently deny these allegations, criticizing the defendants for making these potentially damaging claims without substantial evidence.

The Glass House Defense: Compliance and Ethics

Despite the storm of accusations from Catalyst, Glass House maintains its firm commitment to regulatory standards and ethical business practices. They highlight their full compliance with all state and local laws governing commercial cannabis operations and underscore that the state has yet to flag them for any violations.

Dissecting Catalyst’s Motives: A Matter of Competition

Glass House’s standpoint is that Catalyst’s allegations are less about legality and more about business competition. Catalyst’s claims, they argue, are a strategic move to tarnish their industry reputation. Glass House goes further to question the genuine intentions behind Catalyst’s public image of being “for the people”, calling it a carefully crafted narrative.

In this Glass House defamation lawsuit, the company seeks a jury trial, damages, an injunction against further defamatory comments, and the removal of defamatory social media posts. They also request for their legal fees to be covered.

Lewis, CEO of Catalyst, remains undeterred by the lawsuit and continues to uphold his claims against Glass House. With no sign of backing down, this legal saga appears to be just beginning.
