The Investigation Unfolds

Following Griner’s departure, Women Grow CEO Chanda Macias addressed attendees, condemning the incident and reassuring the audience that security measures were in place. “Women Grow and our community are under attack in an effort to disrupt, intimidate, and silence us. This is not just a threat against one person—it is a threat against all of us. This is unacceptable,” she stated.

The hotel, Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, later informed Women Grow that the message had allegedly been left by a previous guest as part of a meme joke and had been overlooked by housekeeping. However, whether the message was coincidental or targeted remains unclear.

Griner’s Impact on Cannabis Advocacy

Griner’s story has played a crucial role in amplifying conversations around cannabis decriminalization and the disproportionate legal consequences faced by marginalized communities. Her detention in Russia, where she was sentenced to nearly a decade in prison for possessing cannabis vape cartridges, fueled widespread calls for policy reform.

Her scheduled appearance at the Women Grow Leadership Summit was anticipated to be a moment of reflection and activism. The conference, dedicated to fostering leadership among women in the cannabis industry, also featured a virtual message from Maryland Governor Wes Moore, who highlighted the state’s progressive steps toward cannabis legalization and social equity.

A Community Stands Strong

Despite Griner’s absence, Women Grow reaffirmed their commitment to supporting her and advocating for a safe space for women in cannabis. “Attacking women for coming together to lead and create change will not stop us. We are actively working with the venue and authorities to investigate how this happened and hold those responsible accountable,” Macias declared.

The Women Grow community and the broader cannabis advocacy movement have expressed unwavering support for Griner, emphasizing that intimidation tactics will not hinder their mission. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by women and LGBTQ+ leaders in the cannabis industry and the broader fight for equity and inclusion.

Looking Ahead

Griner’s decision to prioritize her safety highlights the ongoing need for increased security and awareness within advocacy spaces. Women Grow remains committed to ensuring that their events foster a safe and empowering environment for all attendees. As the investigation continues, the cannabis community stands in solidarity with Griner, reinforcing that threats and intimidation will not deter progress.

Black Cannabis Magazine is your go-to platform for cannabis culture, news, and lifestyle content with a focus on diversity and inclusion. Unfortunately, my experience with the Illinois Independent Cannabis Transporters Association (IICTA) has shown how easily these values can be undermined by unethical practices. I feel compelled to share my story to address the harm caused by IICTA and its leadership.

IICTA’s Misuse of Our Brand

ACC of Illinois Transportation has never been affiliated with IICTA. Despite this, IICTA has been using our logo without permission, falsely implying a connection between our organizations. This is not just misleading—it is fraudulent.

For months, we have asked them to stop using our logo. Each request has been ignored. Their actions create confusion for stakeholders and harm the trust we’ve built in the cannabis community. This misuse of our brand is unacceptable, and we are pursuing legal action to protect our reputation and disassociate ourselves from IICTA entirely.

Personal Betrayal During the Veto Session

My frustrations with IICTA go beyond branding issues. Last year, during the Veto Session in Springfield, I witnessed firsthand how IICTA’s leadership operates. Amber, our registered lobbyist, failed to inform us that she had officially registered in August. We discovered this critical detail only at the last minute.

What hurt the most, however, were the text messages. Amber and Joanne Grace, representing IICTA and Hands to Heart, accidentally sent me messages mocking my efforts to advocate for third-party transporters. Their words stung, not only because they were disrespectful but because they disregarded my years of dedication to this industry. While I worked to build relationships and push for change, they took credit for my work, using my connections and efforts without acknowledgment.

A Pattern of Exploitation

This experience is part of a broader problem I’ve seen repeatedly in cannabis advocacy: the exploitation of Black business owners. Individuals like Amber have used our sweat equity and networks for their gain, only to turn around and claim the work as their own.

It is especially troubling to see Amber advocating for her boyfriend, who holds a third-party transporter license in Chicago, while presenting herself as a champion for all transporters. This raises questions about her true intentions and whose interests she is truly serving. Advocacy should never be self-serving—it should be about lifting the community as a whole.

Why I No Longer Advocate for Transporters

After years of fighting for equity and transparency, I have decided to step away from advocating for cannabis transporters or aligning myself with any association. The constant disrespect, exploitation, and misrepresentation have taken a toll.

I have spent years educating others about cannabis legislation, often facing resistance from those unwilling to see the bigger picture. To have my work appropriated by others is disheartening. It’s not enough to build relationships and push for change; we must also hold others accountable when they undermine those efforts.

Moving Forward with Integrity

At ACC of Illinois Transportation, we remain steadfast in our commitment to transparency, equity, and respect. The actions of IICTA’s leadership do not define us. Instead, they motivate us to continue fighting for what is right.

I encourage the cannabis community to support organizations and individuals who embody integrity and fairness. Let’s build a cannabis industry where misrepresentation and exploitation have no place. Advocacy must be rooted in respect, collaboration, and a shared vision for progress.

A Call for Accountability

The cannabis industry has always promised equity and fairness. To achieve this, we must hold people accountable for their actions. IICTA’s misuse of our brand and their unethical practices are unacceptable, and they must answer for the harm they have caused.

Thank you to everyone who has supported ACC of Illinois Transportation. Your trust and encouragement mean everything to us as we continue to stand for the principles that matter most.

#ACCofIllinois #Transparency #Respect #CannabisCommunity

The post ACC of Illinois on IICTA Misuse: Transparency and Integrity in Cannabis appeared first on Black Cannabis Magazine.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">199813</post-id>

Al Harrington Opens First Village Dispensary in New Jersey

Hazey Taughtme

Retail

Sports

al Harrington

Cannabis Advocacy

cannabis industry

cannabis prohibition

community engagement

Dan Pettigrew

dispensary opening

East Coast dispensary

featured

Hoboken

new jersey

NJ CAN 2020

Social Equity

Village Dispensary

viola

Al Harrington, former NBA star and now cannabis industry trailblazer, is making waves again—but this time, it’s close to home. The recent grand opening of Village Dispensary in New Jersey on September 21st, 2024, marks a full-circle moment for Harrington, whose journey in the cannabis world is rooted in personal experience and a mission for change.

A Personal Mission to Transform the Cannabis Industry

Harrington’s passion for cannabis began when he witnessed its positive impact on his grandmother’s glaucoma. Searching for natural relief for her, Harrington discovered the medicinal power of cannabis and never looked back. This personal connection inspired him to team up with Dan Pettigrew, a fellow advocate and entrepreneur, to launch Viola, a cannabis brand dedicated to producing quality products while addressing the deep-rooted inequalities in the industry.

The journey from founding Viola to opening Village Brands has been one of vision and perseverance. While Viola focuses on producing top-tier cannabis products, Village Brands, their next venture, was created to expand their footprint through dispensary openings across the nation. The New Jersey location is the first on the East Coast, a milestone that holds significant meaning for Harrington.

Team Viola. Harrington and Pettigrew have made it their mission to ensure that communities of color, which have been disproportionately affected by cannabis prohibition, have access to opportunities within the growing industry. Their support for the NJ CAN 2020 campaign helped end cannabis prohibition in New Jersey, paving the way for a more inclusive cannabis landscape.

JMartinVisuals

Village Dispensary will focus on catering to the needs of local Hoboken residents, providing a curated selection of premium products, including those from Viola, and ensuring top-tier customer service. Festival. This incident has captured worldwide attention, highlighting the complex legal landscapes surrounding cannabis use.

The Incident at Beach Please! Festival

Wiz Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Thomaz, performed at the Beach Please! Festival on Saturday, July 13. Known for his hit songs and candid cannabis advocacy, Khalifa was seen lighting up a joint during his performance, which was later shared widely on social media. The audience of thousands watched as the rapper indulged in what seemed like a routine act for him.

However, the Romanian authorities took the incident seriously. The Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism confirmed in a press release that Khalifa was charged with “illegal possession of high-risk drugs.” They stated that he had over 18 grams of cannabis in his possession and consumed more onstage in the form of an artisanal cigarette.

Arrest and Immediate Aftermath

Following his performance, footage surfaced showing Khalifa being escorted by police away from the festival site. The sight of the “See You Again” rapper in police custody quickly went viral, sparking a mix of reactions from fans and the public.

In response to his arrest, Khalifa issued an apology on social media. He wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Last night’s show was amazing. I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up onstage. They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big (expletive) joint next time.”

Broader Implications and Public Reaction

Khalifa’s arrest has ignited a broader conversation about cannabis laws and their enforcement around the world. The incident underscores the need for artists and public figures to be aware of local laws, especially when performing internationally. Khalifa’s candid apology and respectful tone in addressing the incident have been well-received by many, though it has also prompted debates on social media about the global inconsistency of cannabis legislation.

Khalifa’s Cannabis Advocacy and Past Incidents

Wiz Khalifa has long been an advocate for cannabis use, often incorporating it into his public persona and performances. Just last year, Khalifa made headlines for admitting he was high on magic mushrooms while throwing the first pitch at a baseball game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cleveland Guardians. His openness about drug use has both endeared him to fans and attracted controversy.

Upcoming Performances

Despite the recent legal troubles, Khalifa’s music career shows no signs of slowing down. He is set to perform at Drai’s Beachclub & Nightclub in Las Vegas on August 30. Fans are eagerly anticipating his performance, though many are curious about how this recent incident might influence his future shows.

Conclusion

Wiz Khalifa’s arrest in Romania has brought significant attention to the varying cannabis laws across the globe. As Khalifa continues his international performances, this incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of respecting local regulations. The rapper’s experience highlights the ongoing dialogue about cannabis use and legalization, resonating with fans and observers worldwide.

The post Wiz Khalifa’s Romanian Arrest Sparks International Debate appeared first on Black Cannabis Magazine.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">199300</post-id>

Susie Plascencia Launches Latina-Owned Altura Brands

Mitsy Ramos

NEWS

Women

Altura Brands

Brand loyalty

Cannabis Advocacy

cannabis industry

Cannabis purchasing power

Community-focused brands

Cultural authenticity

Inclusive cannabis brands

Latina consumers

Latina-owned business

Latinas in Cannabis

MOTA Glass

Susie Plascencia

Entrepreneur Susie Plascencia has announced the launch of Altura Brands, the nation’s premier Latino-owned, cannabis-focused house of brands. Altura Brands aims to cater specifically to Latino consumers, filling a gap in the market with genuine, community-centered cannabis products. This groundbreaking initiative is set to redefine the cannabis industry by prioritizing cultural authenticity and consumer trust.

A Visionary Approach to Brand Development

Susie Plascencia, a prominent figure in the Latino cannabis movement, is known for her integrity-forward and community-centered approach. As the founder and CEO of NightShift Digital, a boutique brand development agency, Plascencia has extensive experience serving clients in tech, non-profit, wellness, cannabis, and cannabis-adjacent industries.

In 2020, she co-founded MOTA Glass, a leading brand of American-made functional glass. Their products, handmade in Los Angeles using lab-grade materials, are sold online and at retail locations worldwide. Merry Jane Media named Susie a top “cannabis power player” that same year. “Our community is undoubtedly purchasing cannabis,” says Plascencia. “However, a lack of trust and genuine connection to brands keeps conscious consumers, many of whom are Black and Brown, from building brand loyalty.”

The Brands Under Altura

Altura Brands’ portfolio will include:

MOTA Glass: A leading brand of American-made functional glass.

Latinas in Cannabis: The largest digital and in-person community for Latina cannabis professionals and enthusiasts.

Latinas in Cannabis Summit: A sister company to Latinas in Cannabis, focusing on events and networking opportunities.

Several new brands are also currently in development, all aimed at providing high-quality products and experiences to Latino consumers.

Elevating Latino Consumers

According to a 2023 report, U.S. Latino purchasing power is measured at $3.4 trillion and shows no signs of slowing down. Plascencia sees immense potential in this market. “I know these communities well because I’m part of them,” she explains. Altura Brands is set to develop, launch, and acquire cannabis and cannabis-adjacent brands with an elevated focus on Latino consumers.

Building Trust and Authentic Connections

Plascencia’s motivation stems from a desire to provide her community with trusted brands that help consumers feel truly served. “Part of my motivation to launch this portfolio is providing my community with brands that help them feel represented and inspired,” she says. By addressing the lack of trust and authentic connection, Altura Brands aims to foster brand loyalty among Latino consumers.

Advocating for Inclusivity in Cannabis

As a longtime advocate for workers, especially women in the cannabis industry, Plascencia understands the wariness towards companies that merely target consumers for sales. Altura Brands is committed to breaking this stigma by offering products that cater to a variety of lifestyles and by advocating for a more inclusive and representative cannabis industry.

Recognitions and Achievements

Plascencia’s contributions to the cannabis industry have been widely recognized. In 2022, Marijuana Venture included her in their 40 Under 40 list, highlighting rising stars in the industry. In 2023, Cannabis Now featured her in their Women of Influence issue. A proud Trojan and alumna of the Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California, Plascencia holds a Master of Arts in Specialized Journalism and a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations.

Conclusion

Altura Brands, under the leadership of Susie Plascencia, is poised to become a significant player in the cannabis industry. By focusing on authenticity, community, and trust, Altura Brands will not only serve the Latino community but also set a new standard for cannabis brands nationwide. Consumers can look forward to curated products that truly represent their lifestyles and values.

The post Susie Plascencia Launches Latina-Owned Altura Brands appeared first on Black Cannabis Magazine.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">199245</post-id>

Roll Up for Equity Film Explores San Diego’s Equity Issues

Hazey Taughtme

Equity

Events

Justice

Women

advocacy film

Cannabis Advocacy

Cannabis Equity

community voices

documentary film

featured

JM Balbuena

legal cannabis industry

marginalized communities

premiere screening

Roll Up for Equity

San Diego

Social Equity

systemic challenges

Introduction In a powerful new documentary, “Roll Up for Equity – Advocating for Access and Opportunity within San Diego’s Cannabis Industry,” director JM Balbuena, a fervent cannabis advocate, casts a spotlight on the ongoing struggle to implement social equity within the bustling cannabis market of San Diego. The city’s regulated cannabis industry showcases a complicated relationship with marginalized communities, often overshadowed by systemic barriers that hinder equitable opportunities.

Voices from the Community

Insights from Local Advocates

“Roll Up for Equity” features a diverse group of voices from San Diego’s forefront advocates, activists, and entrepreneurs, including Armand King, Terrie Best, and MEGain McCall. Through interviews and public meeting footage, these individuals articulate the city’s challenges and their personal and collective endeavors to foster change.

The Power of Cinema in Advocacy

JM Balbuena’s Vision

Director JM Balbuena emphasizes the transformative power of film as a medium to highlight critical issues, “As a filmmaker, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of cinema. I’m compelled to leverage this medium to spotlight the critical issue of social equity in the cannabis sector—a realm where disparities and barriers persistently shadow the promise of progress and inclusivity.”

The Documentary’s Impact

A Catalyst for Broader Conversations

The documentary not only focuses on San Diego but also aims to resonate nationwide, igniting discussions and encouraging other regions to reflect on and reform their own cannabis equity efforts. By celebrating the advocates and exposing the disparities, the film seeks to catalyze a movement towards more inclusive and equitable cannabis policies.

Screening and Support

Debut Details and Sponsor Acknowledgment

The documentary will premiere in San Diego on April 20, 2024. Viewers can catch a sneak peek via the trailer available at www.JMBalbuena.com. The project has garnered support from notable sponsors like Americans for Safe Access San Diego Chapter, NORLM San Diego, and the Blue Dream Democratic Club, all of whom are pivotal in advocating for medical cannabis acceptance and policy reform.

Conclusion

“Roll Up for Equity” is more than a film; it is a campaign and a clarion call to lawmakers and citizens alike to support and implement social equity in cannabis policies. As viewers anticipate its release, the conversations it will inspire are expected to influence advocacy and policy-making, not just in San Diego but across the nation. Join the premiere to witness a compelling story of struggle, resilience, and hope in the face of adversity.

The post Roll Up for Equity Film Explores San Diego’s Equity Issues appeared first on Black Cannabis Magazine.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">199091</post-id>

Wu-Tang Clan to Headline 2024 National Cannabis Festival

Hazey Taughtme

Celebrity

Events

NEWS

2024 Events

Cannabis Advocacy

Cannabis Culture

Cannabis Education

Festival Experience

music festival

National Cannabis Festival

Redman

RFK Stadium

Shops of Shaolin

Thundercat

Washington D.C.

wu-tang clan

Unveiling a Celebration Like No Other The National Cannabis Festival (NCF) is set to electrify the RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. with a stellar lineup featuring the legendary Wu-Tang Clan, the eclectic Thundercat, and the iconic Redman. This groundbreaking venture offers daily operations from 11 AM to 9 PM, inviting both locals and visitors to explore its exceptional selection of cannabis products.

Foundations in Family and Community

Trends is a culmination of vision and resilience brought to life by the Carter family—brothers Rodney Carter Jr. and Brandon Carter, alongside their father. Both brothers, natives of Queens and advocates of cannabis education, have navigated through the complexities of cannabis legislation to secure a CAURD license, turning their past adversities into a force for advocacy and positive change.

Rodney, a fitness expert, and Brandon, a software developer, have integrated their diverse skills with their father’s wisdom to not just create a business, but to foster a movement centered on social responsibility and empowerment.

Commitment to Quality and Education

At Trends, the focus extends beyond the commerce of cannabis. She is vocally urging the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to deschedule marijuana, aiming to reclassify it similarly to alcohol or tobacco.

The Current Classification

Marijuana currently resides in the Schedule I category, alongside drugs like heroin. This classification deems it more dangerous than substances like fentanyl and cocaine, which surprisingly fall under Schedule II.

Voices for Descheduling

Gotham Buds co-owner, Malika Bellamy, VP of Communications and Marketing, joins the call for descheduling. At a recent press conference, Bellamy expressed unequivocal support for this initiative. “Descheduling marijuana is not just a policy change; it’s a step towards rectifying historical injustices,” Bellamy stated, emphasizing the disproportionate impact on marginalized communities.

A Step Toward Social Justice

The push for descheduling is deeply intertwined with the pursuit of social justice. Communities historically impacted by stringent marijuana laws stand to benefit significantly from this policy revision. It’s about “avenging the disenfranchised,” as Bellamy puts it, offering a chance to redress past wrongs.

The HHS Recommendation

In a notable development, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services suggested reclassifying marijuana as a Schedule III drug, akin to Tylenol 3. This would acknowledge its medical benefits while maintaining federal illegality.

Why Descheduling?

Sen. Gillibrand argues that simply reclassifying marijuana isn’t sufficient. “It’s about more than just recognizing medical benefits. It’s about decriminalization and addressing the past injustices that have disproportionately affected certain communities,” she states. Rep. Jerry Nadler echoes this sentiment, stressing the importance of removing the stigma attached to cannabis convictions.

Overcoming Challenges

Gillibrand acknowledges the complexities and stigma surrounding this issue. The journey towards descheduling faces both social and political hurdles, yet it’s a path she believes is worth pursuing for the greater good.

Conclusion

As the debate around marijuana policy reform heats up, Sen. Gillibrand’s call for descheduling marks a pivotal moment. This movement transcends mere drug policy; it’s a stride toward justice, equity, and rational legal standards.

The post Sen.
