The New Jersey Business Action Center (NJBAC), under the leadership of the New Jersey Department of State and with the support of the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission (NJ-CRC), launched the Cannabis Training Academy (CTA) last week. This no-cost, comprehensive online educational platform is now available and aims to support current and aspiring cannabis business owners as they navigate the complex process of establishing a licensed, regulatory-compliant cannabis business in New Jersey.

Why the Cannabis Training Academy (CTA) Matters

As the cannabis industry continues to grow in New Jersey, there is a pressing need for business owners to understand not just the opportunities but also the challenges of this highly regulated space. The CTA is designed to fill this knowledge gap by offering a learner-led program that covers a wide range of topics, from applying for a license to operational best practices.

“The State of New Jersey is committed to seeing aspiring small business owners succeed in the cannabis industry. The CTA aims to create a well-informed, diverse community of leaders who can take advantage of these new opportunities and contribute to the growth and economic success of their respective neighborhoods and the state overall,” shared Governor Phil Murphy.

What You Can Expect from the CTA

The CTA provides a robust curriculum that guides participants through every critical phase of cannabis business development. Here are some key topics that the CTA covers:

Licensing Application Process: Learn how to submit successful applications, including conditional licenses and full licenses, which are crucial for operating legally in New Jersey’s cannabis market.

Municipal Approval and Zoning: Understanding local regulations is key to setting up shop, and the CTA provides a roadmap to securing the necessary approvals.

Raising Capital: Learn the financial aspects of starting a cannabis business, including tips on securing funding and budgeting for long-term success.

Post-Licensing Operations: Once your business is licensed, there are a host of operational considerations. The CTA ensures you’re prepared for day-to-day management, from staffing to compliance.

Conditional Conversion Support: Businesses that start with a conditional license often face unique challenges, and the CTA provides targeted support to help you convert to a full license.

Targeting Impact Zones for Equity and Growth

A key focus of the CTA is to uplift those in CRC-designated Impact Zones—areas in New Jersey most affected by cannabis prohibition and enforcement. Residents or business owners planning to establish cannabis operations in these areas can access additional resources through seven extended levels of coursework. This special track includes over 60 classes, specifically tailored to address the unique challenges and opportunities faced by Impact Zone entrepreneurs.

“Even if a businessperson has had experience working in the cannabis industry, the CTA will be an invaluable and up-to-date resource that will guide them through the process of legal cannabis business management. The insights provided will help entrepreneurs avoid common pitfalls and get their business on the right track from the start,”explained Lieutenant Governor Tahesha Way, Esq.

Flexible Learning Options to Fit Your Schedule

The Cannabis Training Academy has been designed with flexibility in mind. Participants can access pre-recorded webinars at their convenience and register for live virtual Q&A sessions with industry experts. This combination of on-demand learning and real-time support ensures that participants can learn at their own pace while getting the answers they need.

Additionally, the CTA will host in-person workshops in the future, providing hands-on learning experiences and networking opportunities for participants.

How to Get Started

The Cannabis Training Academy is now live. Entrepreneurs who are New Jersey residents and over 21 can visit nj.gov/state/bac/cannabis-training/about for more information and to register for the program.

Whether you’re an aspiring entrepreneur or a seasoned professional, the Cannabis Training Academy is a valuable resource that can help you succeed in New Jersey’s rapidly expanding cannabis market.

The Diasporic Alliance for Cannabis Opportunities and Black Cannabis Week

The Diasporic Alliance for Cannabis Opportunities is a community organization with a nonprofit fiduciary relationship with Marijuana Justice, a 501c3. Their main goal is to raise awareness about educational, wellness, and economic prospects in the cannabis industry across the diaspora. DACO strives to foster a balanced and thriving cannabis community that promotes physical and mental well-being.

Black Cannabis Week is one of DACO’s annual programming initiatives. It focuses on organizing cannabis events that span across the African diaspora. These events are hosted virtually and physically, offering opportunities for individuals to engage and participate.

Cannabis legalization has swept across numerous states in the United States, leading to a shift in public perception regarding its use. While cannabis is often seen as harmless, particularly for recreational purposes, its effects on certain populations, especially women with disabilities, warrant closer examination. A recent study from Florida Atlantic University sheds light on this critical issue, revealing that a significant percentage of women with disabilities view cannabis as a harmless substance. This article delves into the study’s findings and explores the broader implications for public health and policy.

The Study and Its Significance

Researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine analyzed data from the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. The study focused on 20,234 women aged 18 to 49, categorizing them by disability status, which included sensory, cognitive, and daily activity disabilities. The objective was to assess the perceived risk of harm associated with weekly cannabis use.

Key Findings

Perception of Cannabis Risk

The study’s results are compelling. Approximately 60% of women with disabilities who used cannabis in the past 12 months perceived no risk of harm from weekly cannabis use. This is a stark contrast to the 26.1% of women without disabilities who shared this perception. Overall, 27.4% of women perceived no risk associated with weekly cannabis use, with certain demographics showing even higher percentages.

Demographic Insights

Women aged 21 to 29, those never married, non-Hispanic Black women, and those living in poverty showed higher rates of perceiving no risk from cannabis use. Additionally, women who perceived their health as fair or poor and those who had experienced a major depressive episode in the past year were more likely to view cannabis as harmless.

Health Implications

The perception of cannabis as a harmless drug among women with disabilities raises significant health concerns. Cannabis use during pregnancy has been linked to adverse birth outcomes, such as low birth weight and preterm delivery. Furthermore, cannabis can affect sex hormones, impacting fertility and ovulation.

Public Health and Policy Recommendations

Given the rising rates of cannabis use and changing perceptions, a multi-faceted approach is necessary to address cannabis use among vulnerable populations. Clinical guidance, provider and patient education, and evidence-based public health programs are crucial. Obstetrician-gynecologists play a vital role in educating patients about healthy behaviors and referring those at risk to addiction treatment professionals.

The Role of Legalization

Interestingly, the study found that women living in states with legalized medical cannabis were less likely to perceive no risk from using cannabis weekly compared to those in states without legal cannabis. This suggests that legalization alone does not necessarily lead to a perception of harmlessness but may involve more nuanced views shaped by local policies and educational efforts.

Conclusion

The findings of this study highlight the urgent need for comprehensive cannabis education and screening programs targeted at women with disabilities. As legalization continues to spread, it is imperative to address the unique challenges faced by this vulnerable population. By fostering informed attitudes and behaviors, we can mitigate the potential health risks associated with cannabis use.

This year’s festival includes the Ultimate Weed Wedding, the Community Changemaker Award, and the Cannatank Entrepreneur Contest, highlighting the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit of the cannabis industry.

As the 2024 National Cannabis Festival draws near, the excitement continues to build. This event not only celebrates the cultural ties of cannabis through music and entertainment but also emphasizes the importance of community and education in advancing cannabis advocacy.

Introduction: Celebrating Inclusivity and High-Quality Cannabis

In the heart of Long Island City, Queens, a new chapter in cannabis retail began last week with the opening of Trends Dispensary at 27-25 44th Drive. Not only is Trends one of the first legal dispensaries in the area, it is also the first Black-owned dispensary in Long Island City. This groundbreaking venture offers daily operations from 11 AM to 9 PM, inviting both locals and visitors to explore its exceptional selection of cannabis products.

Foundations in Family and Community

Trends is a culmination of vision and resilience brought to life by the Carter family—brothers Rodney Carter Jr. and Brandon Carter, alongside their father. Both brothers, natives of Queens and advocates of cannabis education, have navigated through the complexities of cannabis legislation to secure a CAURD license, turning their past adversities into a force for advocacy and positive change.

Rodney, a fitness expert, and Brandon, a software developer, have integrated their diverse skills with their father’s wisdom to not just create a business, but to foster a movement centered on social responsibility and empowerment.

Commitment to Quality and Education

At Trends, the focus extends beyond the commerce of cannabis. The dispensary is dedicated to educating its customers about the benefits and safe use of cannabis through a carefully chosen product lineup from trusted brands like Issavibe, Smokiez, 1906, Rove, Tyson 2.0, and Chef for Higher. Each product is rigorously tested and selected to ensure the highest quality and safety standards are met.

A Hub for Social Change and Innovation

Trends has forged a significant partnership with The Housing Works Cannabis Co., renowned for its advocacy against homelessness and its support for the LGBTQ+ community, among others. This collaboration underscores Trends’ commitment to philanthropy and its pledge to donate a substantial portion of its sales to support various social initiatives, reinforcing its role as a pillar of community support.

The dispensary’s innovative approach is also reflected in its community engagement efforts, which include hosting events like elevated yoga, THC-infused massage classes, and culinary experiences that highlight the versatile benefits of cannabis.

Visionary Leadership for a Brighter Future

“Trends is more than a dispensary; it’s a revolution in how we perceive and interact with cannabis,” states Brandon Carter, Co-Founder and Chief of Operations. “We are here to provide a safe, educational environment where seasoned cannabis enthusiasts and newcomers alike can explore the benefits of cannabis.”

Echoing his brother’s sentiments, Rodney Carter Jr., Co-Founder & CEO, adds, “We aim to dismantle the stigmas surrounding cannabis, utilizing education and community-focused initiatives to advocate for the plant’s role in cultural and social enrichment.”

Conclusion: A Landmark of Progress and Pride

Trends Dispensary is not just a store; it is a beacon of change and a model of inclusivity, set to transform Long Island City’s landscape. By integrating high-quality cannabis products, educational initiatives, and community support into its core operations, Trends is setting a new standard for what a dispensary can represent in the community it serves.

The journey from East Harlem’s vibrant, if tumultuous, streets to the vanguard of New York’s legal cannabis industry paints a portrait of transformation. This tale of metamorphosis reaches a new peak with the grand opening of Dazed’s flagship dispensary in the heart of Manhattan, signifying more than just the opening of a store—it heralds the inauguration of a community renaissance.

The Birth of a Vision

Born amidst the throes of the war on drugs, Keshawn Warner’s narrative mirrors the evolution of cannabis itself—from a symbol of socioeconomic struggle to one of opportunity and prosperity. From the echo of gunshots to the rattle of handcuffs, Keshawn’s personal brush with the law for attempting to purchase cannabis fueled a fire within. It was this fire that propelled him to pivot the narrative, turning lemons into lemonade.

From Lemons to Lemonade

A foray into the Californian and Coloradan cannabis landscapes illuminated the entrepreneurial path for Keshawn. Armed with a degree in computer science and a relentless spirit, he witnessed firsthand the burgeoning industry’s potential. In August 2021, he materialized his vision with the opening of Dazed Massachusetts, laying down the foundation for what would soon be a significant player on the East Coast cannabis stage.

A Cultural Confluence

Dazed’s grand opening event is more than a celebration; it’s a cultural confluence where music by the dynamic twin DJ duo Angel + Dren will serenade guests.

Attendees will marvel at Sam Teich’s customized lighters and indulge in the premium spirits of Villon Cognac and Belaire Rose. BCakeNY’s confections and Barn Joo’s savory bites promise to tantalize the taste buds, while Dazed’s knowledgeable budtenders will guide patrons through a sophisticated cannabis journey.

Advocacy and Community First

Dazed stands at the intersection of luxury and advocacy, with a grand opening that also kicks off a vital partnership with ACS, aimed at protecting the most vulnerable from accidental cannabis ingestion. This partnership is punctuated by the dispensary’s commitment to the Wounded Warrior Project on Veterans Day, intertwining community support with celebration.

Legacy to Legal

Dazed’s New York narrative is emblematic of a broader shift—from Keshawn’s days of being unjustly targeted to now leading a legal cannabis enterprise in Manhattan. The historic Decker Building in Union Square, once the creative hub for Andy Warhol, is now the site of Dazed’s revolutionary retail experience, crafting a nostalgic yet forward-looking cannabis narrative.

Looking Forward

With eyes set firmly on the future, Dazed’s projected growth reflects not just a business plan but a blueprint for community and industry evolution. As Keshawn Warner reflects on the path from the fringes to the forefront, the opening of Dazed stands as a testament to the power of resilience and the promise of a legacy reimagined.

Virginia CCA Parent Toolkit: A Guided Approach to Youth Cannabis Issues

Intro: Why the Parent Toolkit Is Essential Now

Amidst rising concerns about youth cannabis use and an alarming increase in hospitalizations, the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority (CCA) has rolled out its Parent Toolkit. This crucial resource aims to equip parents with vital information to manage the complexities of cannabis use among young people.

What Awaits You Inside the Virgina CCA Parent Toolkit

The Parent Toolkit is a rich repository that breaks down essential cannabis-related topics into easily digestible parts. These include:

Various types of cannabis products

In-depth explanations about the physiological effects of cannabis on developing bodies and brains

Virginia-specific laws concerning cannabis

Practical tips for initiating nuanced conversations about cannabis with your kids

Recognizable signs of cannabis use among young people

Endorsements and Cultural Relevance

JM Pedini, the active executive director of Virginia NORML, champions this effort by the CCA. “Considering the rise of unregulated cannabis products, the Toolkit couldn’t have come at a better time,” Pedini notes.

Why This Matters: Hard Numbers and Tough Facts

The urgency of this toolkit is underscored by recent alarming statistics. Over 600 minors visited emergency rooms due to cannabis-related issues in just the first three months of 2023. This raises a red flag about the growing relevance and timeliness of resources like the Parent Toolkit.

Community Voices and the Toolkit’s Genesis

This initiative did not manifest overnight. It is the product of significant input from families, healthcare professionals, and community leaders. Their collective voice called for a comprehensive guide like the Virginia CCA Parent Toolkit, emphasizing its necessity.

Application and Future Implications

The efficacy of the Virginia CCA Parent Toolkit will be validated through its practical application. Parents, schools, and healthcare organizations must not only review but actively implement these guidelines.

Closing Thoughts: It Takes a Village

Resources like the Virginia CCA Parent Toolkit affirm that safeguarding our youth is a collective responsibility. As Virginia adjusts to its cannabis legalization landscape, such toolkits become invaluable lifelines.

As the dust settles on Maryland’s new era of recreational marijuana use, Mary & Main, a black-owned dispensary, stands triumphant. Nestled in Capitol Heights, Prince George’s County, this establishment is redefining the cannabis landscape.

Cannabis Workforce Development: A New Dawn in NY

A remarkable shift in New York’s cannabis industry is on the horizon. Union Square Travel Agency: A Cannabis Store (“USQTA”), a purpose-driven dispensary, and the Cannabis Justice & Equity Initiative (“CJEI”), a New York-based nonprofit, heralds a novel approach to Cannabis Workforce Development.

A Strong Commitment to Justice & Equity

The Cannabis Justice & Equity Initiative is devoted to two primary objectives: justice, by ensuring no more cannabis prisoners in New York and securing expungement of all cannabis convictions, and equity, through workforce and career development. The justice-impacted individuals, a term CJEI uses to describe a broader population affected by anti-cannabis enforcement, are at the heart of their efforts.

Similarly, Union Square Travel Agency: A Cannabis Store is a New York-born company committed to the legalization of cannabis and the belief that the cannabis industry should contribute to repairing the damage caused by the war on drugs. It supports BIPOC, woman-owned, and LGBTQIA+ brands and hires formerly incarcerated and legacy operators.

A Groundbreaking Collaboration

These two organizations unveiled their partnership and the forthcoming Cannabis Workforce Development program at a press conference scheduled for Tuesday, June 27 at 10:00 am at City College’s Harlem campus. The press conference will include notable figures such as Terrence Coffie,an adjunct professor at NYU and a graduate of the Doe Fund, Dasheeda Dawson, Founding Director of CannabisNYC, Keisha Sutton-James, Manhattan Deputy Borough President, Damian Fagon, OCM’s Chief Equity Officer, Jamil Myrie, Co-Founder and Chief Programs Officer for CJEI, Arana Hankin-Biggers, President of USQTA, Robert Cornegy, Special Advisor to USQTA, Dr. Vincent Boudreau City College President and others.

A Strategic Focus on Downstate New York

The key geographical area of interest for the program is the downstate region, an area severely impacted by cannabis convictions. Here, CJEI’s community engagement and employment readiness initiatives play a vital role, equipping returnees to tap into the 60,000 job opportunities in NY’s thriving cannabis industry.

Holistic Education: The Foundation of Cannabis Workforce Development

In collaboration with the Cannabis Workforce Initiative, CJEI has developed a comprehensive 16-week certificate program. The curriculum covers digital literacy, seed-to-sale compliance, networking, resume building, and interview preparation, among other areas.

Creating Equity within the Cannabis Industry

Jamil Myrie, Co-Founder of CJEI, emphasized, “This directly targets the purpose of democratizing cannabis opportunities.” Terrence Coffie, Co-Founder and Executive Director, reinforced this vision, adding, “Our aim is to provide opportunities for all New Yorkers impacted by anti-cannabis enforcement.”

CJEI & USQTA: Advocates for Second Chances

CJEI’s partnership with USQTA seeks to extend a hand to those negatively affected by the failed war on drugs. Arana Hankin-Biggers, President of USQTA, expressed her support for the program, stating, “We proudly back CJEI’s comprehensive approach to Cannabis Workforce Development.”

The Cannabis Workforce Development program is not just about job creation; it’s about transforming lives and offering second chances in the blossoming NY cannabis industry. Join us at the press conference to learn more about this empowering initiative.

A New Era of Inclusive Growth: NJBAC Introduces Tauhid Chappell as Executive Director of the Cannabis Training Academy

In an exciting development for the burgeoning New Jersey cannabis industry, the NJ Business Action Center (NJBAC) has named Tauhid Chappell as the inaugural Executive Director of its Cannabis Training Academy (CTA). Slated for an official unveiling in late 2023, the CTA stands as a beacon of empowerment for individuals – particularly from underserved communities, affected most by cannabis prohibition – seeking to carve a niche in the adult-use cannabis market.

The Secretary of State, Tahesha Way, succinctly expressed the mood of the day. “The appointment of the new CTA Executive Director is a big leap towards a fairer New Jersey. With each passing day, our cannabis industry grows stronger. By investing in a knowledgeable workforce, we’re nurturing an environment that fosters opportunities.”

Riding the Wave of Education: An Overview of CTA

Announced in 2022, the CTA is a no-cost initiative providing online courses for New Jersey residents aged 21 and above, keen on obtaining an adult-use cannabis license. The qualification criterion seeks to bolster social equity and extends to diverse-owned, Impact Zone, and microbusiness applicants. A panel of industry savants will impart knowledge on application procedures, legal requirements, and best cannabis business practices, fortified with live Q&A sessions.

Tauhid Chappell: Leading with Experience and Expertise

As the newly appointed Executive Director, Chappell will oversee comprehensive educational experiences, curriculum development, and establishing a robust cannabis professional network. Chappell, a veteran of the Philadelphia Cannabusiness Association and a highly respected figure in cannabis business and advocacy, is an invaluable asset to the CTA.

“I look forward to ensuring these aspiring entrepreneurs receive the resources they need to thrive in New Jersey,” said Chappell.

Final Thoughts

Penni Wild, Deputy Director of NJBAC, aptly summarizes the essence of the Cannabis Training Academy. “With Tauhid’s expertise, we will equip students with the information they need to thrive.”

The academy symbolizes an innovative approach to equitably nurture the cannabis industry, providing a platform to educate, empower, and establish future industry leaders. The CTA’s mission stands as a testament to the state’s commitment to healing the wounds inflicted on marginalized communities in the pre-legalization era.
