Leadership Driven by Passion and Purpose

Founder Tahir Johnson, who also serves as the President of the Minority Cannabis Business Association (MCBA), shared that his journey to starting Simply Pure Trenton began in 2018.

Tahir Johnson

He recognized both the economic opportunities and the stark disparities faced by African-Americans disproportionately arrested for cannabis-related offenses. This realization fueled his mission to create change. “Working in financial services for over a decade, I recognized that lack of access to capital and technical skills were major barriers in the industry. I left my job in wealth management, became a budtender, and pursued licenses in Maryland and New Jersey in 2019,” Johnson explained.

Despite initial setbacks, Johnson transitioned into cannabis advocacy, working with prominent trade groups to advance social equity at state and federal levels. His primary goal has always been to advance Black economic success and foster collaboration while making a meaningful impact on his community. “When cannabis was legalized in New Jersey, I saw an opportunity to try again. Partnering with Simply Pure, the first Black-owned legal dispensary in the country, and leveraging my friendship with Wanda James, I knew bringing Simply Pure to my hometown of Trenton, NJ was the right choice,” Johnson stated.

Tahir Johnson & Wanda James

Wanda James, Simply Pure’s Founder, emphasized the significance of this expansion, stating, “Tahir’s dedication to his community and vision for generational change makes him the ideal leader for Simply Pure Trenton as we expand outside of Colorado for the first time. This opening marks the start of our mission to collaborate with more social equity licensees and support those affected by the War on Drugs in reshaping the U.S. cannabis industry.”

Personal Impact of Cannabis Prohibition

Cannabis prohibition has had a profound impact on Johnson’s life. He has been arrested for cannabis three times, including a felony for possession with intent to distribute. “Growing up, I saw firsthand how the war on drugs devastated my community. My brothers and I were directly affected, and witnessing the pervasive impact of cannabis-related arrests and convictions opened my eyes to systemic injustices,” Johnson recounted. “These arrests create a ripple effect, impacting employment opportunities, housing stability, and overall quality of life. My personal experiences with cannabis prohibition have shaped every aspect of our mission, driving us to be a beacon of hope and a catalyst for change in the industry.”

These experiences instilled in him a sense of responsibility to advocate for change. Johnson explained that the goal of Simply Pure Trenton is not just to build a successful business but to create a platform for social equity and restorative justice. “I wanted to provide opportunities for those who, like me, have been marginalized by the war on drugs. Through Simply Pure Trenton, I strive to offer more than just cannabis products. I aim to create economic opportunities, provide education and resources, and advocate for policy changes supporting communities disproportionately impacted by cannabis prohibition.”

Contributing Positively to the Local Community

Simply Pure Trenton is committed to making a positive impact on the local community. One key initiative is “Social Justice Sundays,” focusing on activities promoting social equity and restorative justice.

During the grand opening weekend, they expunged 11 records with The Glory Firm, wrote 26 letters to prisoners incarcerated for cannabis with 40 Tons Brand, and hosted an advocacy activation with Free My Weedman. These activities not only helped individuals affected by past cannabis convictions but also highlighted the company’s dedication to addressing long-standing social injustices.

In addition, Simply Pure Trenton has partnered with the New Jersey Reentry Corporation and will donate 2% of net proceeds to support their work. This partnership helps reintegrate and support individuals impacted by the criminal justice system. Johnson highlighted that the dispensary aims to be a community hub, offering education and hosting cultural events that enrich the lives of local residents. “We provide resources and workshops to educate our community about the benefits and responsible use of cannabis, and host cultural events that celebrate local talent and heritage, fostering a sense of community and belonging.”

This approach aligns with the broader vision of using the dispensary as a platform for positive change. By integrating educational programs and community events into their operations, Simply Pure Trenton seeks to break down barriers and change perceptions about cannabis while supporting local development and empowerment.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Simply Pure Trenton

Looking ahead, Johnson’s plans for Simply Pure Trenton focus on growth and expanding their impact in the evolving cannabis industry. “Now that the dispensary is open, my immediate focus is on scaling our operations and enhancing our customer experience. We have been awarded conditional licenses for cultivation and delivery, which will allow us to offer a more comprehensive range of products and services,” he elaborated.

Johnson envisions Simply Pure Trenton playing a pivotal role in setting standards for quality, social responsibility, and community involvement. “Our goal is to be a leader not just in business success but in fostering an inclusive and equitable industry. Through strategic growth and unwavering commitment to our values, we aspire to be a model for others in the cannabis space, demonstrating that it is possible to achieve commercial success while driving positive social change. By leveraging our growth, we aim to create more job opportunities and support local economic development.”

The emphasis on growth is not limited to financial metrics but extends to creating a more diverse and representative cannabis industry. By providing opportunities for local entrepreneurs and forming partnerships that enhance their social equity mission, Simply Pure Trenton is poised to be at the forefront of meaningful change in New Jersey and beyond.

Introduction

Brooklyn’s Park Slope neighborhood has marked a significant milestone in New York City’s cannabis industry with the opening of Matawana Cannabis Dispensary. This historic venture is not only the borough’s first Black- and woman-owned cannabis shop but also a symbol of resilience, equity, and healing in a community historically impacted by cannabis prohibition. The opening of Matawana represents a crucial step towards rectifying past injustices and pioneering an inclusive future for the legal cannabis market.

A Personal Journey to Empowerment

Matawana’s inception is deeply rooted in the personal experiences of its founder, Leeann Mata, who has witnessed first-hand the detrimental effects of marijuana prohibition on her family. Assaults, arrests, and charges related to marijuana have unfairly targeted Mata’s father and three of her brothers, painting a vivid picture of the challenges faced by many under stop-and-frisk policies. Yet, from these adversities, Matawana emerged as a beacon of hope. Leeann Mata‘s journey from a college student seeking anxiety relief through natural herbs to a business owner illustrates the transformative power of cannabis when embraced as a healing herb rather than a substance of abuse.

Matawana: A Model for Equitable Growth

The opening of Matawana on the last day of Black History Month is emblematic of New York City’s commitment to addressing past wrongs and fostering equitable opportunities in the cannabis industry. Mayor Eric Adams and Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer have expressed their support for legal dispensaries like Matawana, emphasizing the importance of shutting down illegal operations to ensure the success and safety of legal entities. This stance underscores a broader strategy to regulate the cannabis market effectively while empowering those most affected by previous prohibition laws.

Beyond Business: A Community Haven

Matawana offers more than just cannabis products; it serves as a community haven for healing and empowerment. With a diverse inventory that includes marijuana flower, pre-rolls, edibles, infused drinks, and topical THC balms, the dispensary caters to various needs and preferences. Moreover, Mata’s commitment to her community shines through her employment practices. By hiring 21 young employees and offering them a living wage, Matawana is contributing to the local economy and providing valuable opportunities for families in Brooklyn.

Conclusion

Matawana Dispensary is not merely a business opening; it’s a significant chapter in Brooklyn’s and New York City’s journey towards a more inclusive, equitable, and compassionate cannabis industry. As the first Black- and woman-owned cannabis dispensary in Brooklyn, Matawana sets a new standard for diversity and empowerment in the sector. Its commitment to healing, community engagement, and equitable growth reflects the potential of legal cannabis to drive positive change. As we celebrate Matawana’s achievements, we are reminded of the importance of supporting legal dispensaries that prioritize the well-being of their communities and the integrity of the industry.

In a landmark move that signifies progress, innovation, and inclusivity, Buffalo celebrates the opening of Public Flower, the city’s first Black- and woman-owned cannabis dispensary. Located at 232 Allen St., this pioneering establishment is not just breaking ground in the cannabis industry but is also revitalizing the Allentown neighborhood’s historic landscape. Founders Sheldon Anderson and Moriah Kelly, through resilience and determination, have navigated the complex legal landscape of New York’s cannabis market to bring their vision to life.

Overcoming Challenges to Pave the Way

The journey to the opening of Public Flower was not without its challenges. Founders Anderson and Kelly faced significant legal hurdles, emblematic of the broader struggles within New York’s burgeoning cannabis industry. Despite these obstacles, their commitment to sharing their passion for cannabis with the community never waned. The opening of Public Flower stands as a testament to their perseverance and is a landmark moment for Buffalo. It represents not only a personal triumph for Anderson and Kelly but also a pivotal step forward in diversifying the local retail scene and contributing to economic development in the Allentown area.

A Fusion of Innovation and Tradition

Situated in a restored historic building, Public Flower melds innovation with tradition. By revitalizing a piece of Allentown’s history, Anderson and Kelly have created a unique space that honors the past while embracing the future of the cannabis industry. Offering both in-person shopping and delivery services, Public Flower caters to a diverse clientele, making it a forward-thinking participant in New York’s legal cannabis market.

A Symbol of Growth and Inclusivity

Public Flower’s launch goes beyond the introduction of a new business; it symbolizes growth, inclusivity, and community enrichment. As the first Black-owned and woman-owned licensed cannabis dispensary in Buffalo, it paves the way for future entrepreneurs and contributes to a more diverse and vibrant local business ecosystem. Anderson and Kelly envision their dispensary as a place of learning and experience, where the community can engage with cannabis in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Contributing to the Community and Industry

The opening of Public Flower has been met with optimism from local business owners and community leaders, who see the dispensary as a boon for neighborhood vibrancy and foot traffic. Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes and other local leaders have recognized the importance of Public Flower, highlighting its role in supporting legal cannabis operations and contributing to the area’s economic development.

A New Chapter for Allentown

Public Flower is more than a dispensary; it is a beacon of innovation, inclusivity, and community empowerment. Its establishment marks a significant milestone in Buffalo’s cannabis scene and is a testament to the transformative power of entrepreneurship. By blending tradition with innovation and fostering a spirit of community engagement, Public Flower stands as a shining example of what can be achieved with resilience, vision, and a commitment to progress.

As we celebrate the opening of Public Flower, we are reminded of the impact that visionary entrepreneurs can have on a community. It is a win not just for its founders but for the entire Buffalo community, signaling a new chapter of growth, inclusivity, and a brighter future for all involved in the heart of Allentown.

From Court to Cannabis: Antonio Harvey and Harmony Roots Advocate for Equity

Introduction

Former Portland Trail Blazer Antonio Harvey has transitioned from scoring points on the court to making a societal impact through cannabis. Along with his wife, head grower Jennifer Speer-Harvey, the couple is committed to creating a more equitable cannabis landscape.

Antonio Harvey: A Trailblazer in More Ways Than One

Best known for his time as a Portland Trail Blazer, Harvey’s influence has moved beyond basketball. He’s leveraging his platform to bring attention to equity issues within the cannabis industry, issues he deeply understands.

The Hurdles of LUCS

Navigating through the exhaustive Land Use Compatibility Survey (LUCS) is a common obstacle for aspiring cannabis entrepreneurs. This becomes even more burdensome for those without the resources to employ expert guidance.

Booming Sales, Limited Access

Cannabis is big business in Oregon, pulling in $80 million in a single month. However, the Cannabis Policy Oversight Team (CPOT) stresses that policies must prioritize social equity to rectify historical imbalances.

Harmony Roots: A Benchmark for Cannabis Equity

Harmony Roots stands out as a vanguard for industry equity and quality. The brand’s unique selling point is its meticulous blend of terpenes and flavonoids, crafted under the expert eye of head grower, Jennifer Speer-Harvey.

Jennifer Speer-Harvey: A Legacy of Farming and a Future in Cannabis

Growing up in an agricultural family, Jennifer Speer-Harvey had a clear vision for her future. Not content to be relegated to the office, she seized the opportunity to become a head grower, earning Harmony Roots a place among Oregon’s ‘Elite Eight.’

The Female Factor in Cannabis

Jennifer Speer-Harvey faced gender-based roadblocks in a male-dominated industry but found an eager market among women. Her journey has empowered her to produce cannabis products that resonate with women across various roles in life.

The Move from “Poison to Plant”

As Antonio Harvey puts it, “Our big thing is getting people off of poison and onto a plant.” He calls for equitable access to the cannabis industry, emphasizing that opportunities should be open for all, not just a privileged few.

Conclusion

Through Harmony Roots, Antonio and Jennifer Speer-Harvey are setting new standards for quality and equity in the cannabis sector. They combine their unique strengths—his influence as a former Trail Blazer and her expertise as a head grower—to push the industry towards a more equitable future.

A Bold Initiative: New York State’s Social Equity Investment Fund

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the opening of Good Grades, marking a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to support social equity in the cannabis industry. The state recently doubled the number of conditional adult-use retail dispensary licenses from 150 to 300, thanks to a $200 million public-private partnership. This first-in-the-nation program provides renovated retail locations to entrepreneurs previously criminalized by cannabis prohibition.

The Pop-Up Program: A Catalyst for Business Growth

Good Grades launched as a pop-up, a common approach for dispensaries supported by the New York State Social Equity Cannabis Investment Fund. This strategy enables businesses to fast-track sales, offer training opportunities for employees, and generate capital. After an initial period, these dispensaries close for final construction and then reopen for long-term operation.

Benefits for the Entire Cannabis Supply Chain

According to state officials, the pop-up program benefits all parties involved in the cannabis supply chain, from farmers growing cannabis to processors manufacturing various products, and distributors providing consumers with safe, trustworthy products.

Extasy James expressed her enthusiasm for opening not only the first woman-owned dispensary under the state program but also the first one in Queens. She highlighted the importance of breaking down barriers that have historically prevented marginalized communities from experiencing the benefits of cannabis. The Good Grades dispensary aims to be a welcoming and inclusive space where customers can learn, explore, and find products tailored to their unique needs.

The Road Ahead: Conditional Retail Sale Licenses

So far, the New York Office of Cannabis Management has received around 900 applications for conditional retail sale licenses. To date, approximately 70 provisional licenses have been issued.

A Reminder to Weed Lovers in Times Square

As marijuana legalization gains momentum, it’s important to remember that not everyone appreciates the aroma. Times Square now reminds visitors that smoking is banned in the public plaza, with new signs posted to inform everyone.

Your Thoughts on Queens’ First Woman-Owned Pop-Up Dispensary

Last Thursday, the city of Springfield celebrated the success of 6 Bricks cannabis dispensary. Winning both “Best Massachusetts Recreational Dispensary” and “Young Entrepreneur of the Year” awards at the New England Cannabis Convention, the owner, Payton Shubrick, shared her vision for inspiring family-owned, minority-owned, and women-owned businesses in the cannabis industry.

A Trailblazer in the Cannabis Industry

Payton Shubrick, CEO and founder of 6 Bricks, not only focuses on selling cannabis and cannabis-infused products but also highlights the importance of supporting Black-owned businesses. As the first Black woman to own a marijuana business in Western Massachusetts and the third statewide, Shubrick is determined to make a difference in an industry where only 1.7% of cannabis-related businesses are Black-owned.

Striving for Equity and Inclusivity

Massachusetts was the first state to mandate an equity program, aiming to bring more members of underrepresented groups into the industry. Despite this effort, only a small percentage of the state’s licensees are from disadvantaged backgrounds. Shubrick, a graduate of the social equity program, believes that the major stumbling blocks to increasing minority ownership in the cannabis industry are financial constraints and red tape.

The Importance of Community and Education

Shubrick’s dispensary, 6 Bricks, aims to create a positive impact on the Springfield community by providing employment opportunities and educating customers about the social history of marijuana and its prohibition. Through wall art and displays, the dispensary shares a comprehensive history of cannabis in the United States, emphasizing the need for equity and inclusivity in the booming marijuana industry.

Redefining the Cannabis Experience

At 6 Bricks, Shubrick’s vision is to normalize the purchase and consumption of cannabis products. Offering private consultation rooms, customers can learn more about various strains, terpene profiles, and their effects. Infused seltzers and other innovative products cater to diverse preferences, making cannabis consumption more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Conclusion: A Bright Future for Springfield’s Cannabis Scene

6 Bricks is a shining example of what’s possible when passion, innovation, and social responsibility collide. As the Springfield cannabis dispensary continues to break barriers and redefine the cannabis experience, it inspires other entrepreneurs to persevere and succeed in this dynamic industry.

Suzan Nickelson, a pioneering leader in the New Jersey cannabis industry, is thrilled to announce the opening of her medical dispensary, Holistic Solutions. The dispensary, located in Waterford, NJ, has received state approval after passing all inspections and is the first and only dispensary in the area. This opening marks a significant milestone as Suzan is the first black woman and the first female to own a cannabis license in New Jersey.

Suzan has been working in the cannabis industry for over two decades, drawing inspiration from the generations of women in her family who were devoted herbalists and passed down knowledge of utilizing cannabis for healing and spirituality. Holistic Solutions, under Suzan’s leadership, is a testament to her belief in the power of cannabis as a tool for wellness and healing. The Alternative Treatment Center, with over 4,000 square feet of sales space and a range of premium THC and CBD products, will provide compassionate care and education to patients enrolled in the New Jersey Medicinal Cannabis Program. The dispensary will also support women and BIPOC-owned cannabis brands by providing ample shelf space for their products.

Suzan is also the CEO of Ital Daughters LLC, a cannabis and hemp consulting company that helps minorities, women, and veterans understand the compliance and regulatory aspects of the industry. She is an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated, a Rutgers University graduate, and a member of Jack and Jill of America, a membership organization dedicated to nurturing future African-American leaders. In the near future, Suzan plans to announce two other New Jersey-based cannabis ventures.

Holistic Solutions is opening with the support of its minority partner, Eastbound Collective. The Collective was formed by Patrik Jonsson, formerly the Northeast Regional President for a large MSO, and aims to collaborate with minority, veteran, and women-owned businesses in the cannabis industry. Patrik Jonsson believes that Holistic Solutions is one of the few operators with the funding, site control, and experience to capitalize on having a license and is excited to support the dispensary in providing tax revenue to the Township in 2023.

The dispensary will have limited hours for its soft opening this week, with full hours starting on February 10th. Pickup and drive-thru options will be available immediately upon opening, with delivery options starting in Spring 2023. Suzan Nickelson’s passion and dedication have brought Holistic Solutions to life, and the dispensary is poised to make a positive impact in the New Jersey cannabis scene and beyond.

The fact that we’re looking like we’re going to be the first fully recreational company in Brockton to open is huge within itself because we were looked at as the underdog and people didn’t think we were going to get this far.”

Jean-Baptiste put a lot of work into getting a community agreement in Brockton. That was a major step in getting her license. She eventually received priority status as an economic empowerment applicant with the Cannabis Control Commission.

Yet, Massachusett’s programs advocating social equity and economic empowerment weren’t working. Though created to benefit the disproportionate entrepreneurs and communities harmed by marijuana prohibition, a majority of the state’s owners are white.

Jean-Baptiste hopes to see legislation that better manages host community negotiations. She believes there should be measuring criteria municipalities use to determine which businesses receive HCAs.

“With more small businesses opening up, we’ll be able to show municipalities that small businesses matter as well as big corporate businesses,” Jean-Baptiste said.

Customers can turn to Legal Greens for a half-dozen strains of flower, edibles, pre-rolls, and concentrates. The store rests in Brockton’s downtown Revocation District. In the past, the location was previously owned by Fred Fontaine, a well-known Haitian activist.

The new store has 15 employees, mostly locals. Many are, as planned, black women. The owners want to ensure Legal Greens has a positive impact on the community.

“It’s really needed in Brockton. Us giving” [the community] “tax money, and having other dispensaries giving tax money, will definitely benefit the city in the long run.”

Jean-Baptiste hopes to see revenue from the industry influence the hiring of police officers, teachers, and firefighters.

Legal Greens is planning to sponsor workshops on how to start a business and get a foothold in the weed industry. Besides Legal Greens, she wants to start a cannabis delivery as well as a second dispensary in Boston. In time, she hopes to take her stores as far as the West Coast.

Cutting the Red Tape

Bryce Hall was one of the first customers when the store opened. “We trying to come out here and support local businesses,” he said. “I’m from Brockton, it means a lot this is part of our community now.”

The dream has taken three years to come to fruition, but Jean-Baptiste hopes to inspire others. They are here to support local businesses. I’m from Brockton, it means a lot this is part of our community now.”
