The team at Upgraded Points analyzed 50 of the largest U.S. cities where recreational cannabis is legal. They evaluated each city on 10 key factors, ranging from dispensary density and cannabis costs to weed-friendly Airbnb stays and unique experiences like cannabis-infused yoga and comedy shows. Each city scored from 0 to 50, with higher scores indicating better cannabis vacation spots.

Denver Tops the List Again

Denver, Colorado, has emerged once more as the leading cannabis vacation destination, scoring 40.10 points. Since 2022, Denver has significantly upped its game, seeing a 32% increase in cannabis-friendly accommodations. Visitors enjoy 48 dispensaries per 100,000 residents and plenty of guided cannabis tours, offering unmatched convenience and variety.

Portland: Affordable and Accessible

Close behind Denver, Portland, Oregon, scored 38.74. This city’s appeal comes from affordable lodging (average $161 per night) and a 20% increase in dispensary access since 2022, now at 55 per 100,000 residents. Portland also boasts some of the lowest cannabis prices nationwide, making it ideal for budget-conscious travelers.

Boulder: Cannabis Comfort and Cuisine

Boulder, Colorado, earned a score of 38.70, standing out with the highest dispensary density—70 per 100,000 residents. Additionally, Boulder offers abundant cannabis-friendly stays, averaging 67 accommodations per 100,000 residents, alongside an impressive fast-food scene perfect for snack cravings.

Missoula: Montana’s Hidden Gem

Missoula, Montana, offers exceptional value, earning a solid 36.28 score. The city combines affordability, with cannabis-friendly lodgings averaging just $180 per night, and accessibility through a robust dispensary network of 68 per 100,000 residents.

Burlington: A Relaxed Retreat

Burlington, Vermont, secures its spot with a score of 36.15, excelling in weed-friendly accommodations, boasting 103 stays per 100,000 residents—the highest nationwide. With a strong dispensary presence, Burlington delivers a truly laid-back cannabis vacation.

The Top 10 U.S. Cities for a Recently Legal Canna-Cation

The study also spotlighted newer cities from states that legalized cannabis within the last five years. Missoula, Montana, claimed the top spot again in this category. Arizona shines bright with multiple cities—Scottsdale (#2), Tucson (#4), and Phoenix (#10)—making the top 10 list. Cleveland, Ohio, the newest entry where cannabis was legalized in 2023, ranked at number nine, showcasing its emerging cannabis-friendly culture.
